Frigidaire and Maytag Central Air Conditioner Unique Features
What are Frigidaire AC and Maytag AC pros?
The brands use “iQ Drive” technology in their top air conditioners. The “i” stands for inverter compressor technology, the same technology used in mini-split air conditioners that are the quietest and most efficient ACs next to geothermal heat pumps. Other brands call this variable-capacity or modulating technology.
When the thermostat calls for air conditioning, the inverter compressor runs continuously, but at low capacity and using very little electricity. The advantages are more precise cooling without temperature fluctuation, higher efficiency because the AC doesn’t waste energy by overcooling your home and less stress on the unit. It’s like the difference between driving very fast and then slowing down, cycling up and down, rather than driving continuously at a moderate speed. It’s more comfortable and easier on the car’s engine, or in the case of air conditioning, more comfortable climate control and AC durability.
Most Maytag and Frigidaire AC models use micro-channel coils manufactured from aluminum. The aluminum coil is more resistant to corrosion than steel coils.
The micro-channel fin design maximizes surface area to allow faster, more efficient heat transfer, so your home cools more quickly. Johnson Control brands York, Luxaire and Coleman micro-channel coils are prone to leaking. Nortek Global micro-channel coils don’t have the same issue.
Finally, Maytag, Frigidaire and the other Nortek Global brands (Westinghouse, Tappan, Broan and Nu-Tone) go through a 144-point factory inspection and testing, the most rigorous in the industry, so it is rare to get one that is “bad out of the box.”
Cons for Frigidaire and Maytag Air Conditioners
These brands have downsized their product offering. The result is that there are no models in the 17-19 SEER range. The most efficient ACs are modulating 20 SEER models; the next most-efficient are two-stage and single-stage 16 SEER air conditioners.
If you live in a very warm climate but don’t want to pay a premium price for an IQ model, then you will have to choose another brand to find a more efficient 2-stage central air conditioner. They’re available from other brands we’ve reviewed including Trane, Coleman/Luxaire, Heil, Carrier, Lennox and Goodman.
Model Analysis and Recommendation
Frigidaire and Maytag make 7 central air conditioner models. This table lists them with their efficiency and essential features.
|Maytag model||Fridigaire model||SEER Rating||Compressor||Communicating||Other|
Note: Higher SEER is not Better. Finding the best SEER is a bit tricky but our SEER Savings Calculator can help you find a suitable SEER based on your location.
The top ACs, Maytag PSA1BG & Frigidaire FSA1BG, are the variable-capacity models from these brands. To maximize performance, these units should be paired with an indoor unit (air handler or furnace) with a variable-speed blower motor. This will produce the best dehumidification and most balanced temperatures from room to room. These best Maytag and Frigidaire central air conditioners are ideal for very warm climates.
Maytag PSA1BF and Frigidaire FSA1BF are the only 2-stage models currently offered by these brands. The air conditioners run at 65% capacity most of the time. This produces quieter, more balanced cooling. They ramp up to 100% capacity when the indoor temperature is significantly higher than the thermostat set point. These Frigidaire and Maytag central air conditioners are designed for moderately warm climates and homeowners that prefer the improved climate control of a 2-stage AC.
Frigidaire FSA1BE/ES4BE and Maytag PSA1BE/CSA1BE are 15-SEER, single-stage ACs that are certified as Energy Star air conditioners. Many utility companies offer rebates and energy-cost credits for the installation of Energy Star HVAC equipment. Contact your energy provider for details or search for rebates from the provider at the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency. These units are right for regions where summers are warm but not extremely hot.
All other Frigidaire and Maytag central air conditioners meet minimum standards for efficiency and are single-state models. They are a good choice for cool climates and part-time settings where the AC isn’t used heavily.
Average Frigidaire and Maytag AC Prices
Each model is produced in a range from 1.5 ton or 2.0 ton to 5.0 ton ACs. That’s 18,000 BTU or 24,000 BTU to 60,000 BTU, as each ton equals 12,000 BTU. Prices for each reflect the different sizes.
Secondly, the System Installed cost includes the AC, labor and all supplies such as a line set, condenser pad, sheet metal connection and new programmable thermostat (if the new AC has functions and performance the old unit lacked).
|Maytag model||Frigidaire model||System Only||System Installed|
|PSA1BG||FSA1BG||$2,875 - $3,625||$4,075 - $5,625|

Maytag and Frigidaire AC Prices by Size
This table shows the average price of all Maytag and Frigidaire central air conditioners at each size from 1.5 tons (18,000 BTU) to 5.0 tons (60,000 BTU). Size is only one factor in AC prices. Efficiency and performance are the other two, and that is why there is a price range for all sizes. The lower end represents less efficient, single-stage models. The top price at each size is the iQ model.
|AC Unit Size||Home Size||System Only||System Installed|
|1.5 ton||Up to 1,000 sf||$1,250 - $2,475||$2,450 - $4,475|
|2 ton||1001 - 1300 sf||$1,315 - $2,875||$2,515 - $4,875|

* The “Home Size” column is a very rough estimate. The warmer your climate is, the bigger the AC must be relative to house size. You can use our AC Sizing Calculator to get a suitable size in a minute.
Where to Get the Latest Rebates and Incentives
As of this writing, the only federal tax credits are for wind and solar. However, many utility companies offer energy rebates and credits when customers install efficient ACs and other HVAC equipment. Your energy provider will have details. You might also find information on the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency.
