Goodman Air Conditioner Reviews & Prices 2024

goodman ac reviews

Goodman makes 5 central air conditioners with efficiency from 14 to 19 SEER. It is one of the smallest AC lineups of any top brand.

Goodman AC price is $2,765 to $6,825 installed based on model, size and installation cost factors.

Note: If you’re just beginning your research into central ac units, then our Central AC Ultimate Guide is the best place to start. Also, our AC Sizing Calculator can help you find a relatively accurate size quickly. Many issues are caused by an oversized or undersized AC.

About Goodman – Are Goodman, Amana & Daikin the Same?

Goodman HVAC equipment has gone through quite a change in the last decade. Once known as cheap both in quality and price, the brand has managed to keep its prices lower than average but significantly improve quality.

While the transition began before 2012, Daikin’s acquisition of Goodman and Amana in that year accelerated Goodman’s revitalization.

Daikin continued to improve Goodman quality while slightly raising costs and eliminating the most generous of the warranty options. Its warranties are still among the very best available.

Did you know? Today, Daikin, Amana and Goodman models are the same with one exception: The variable speed AC is no longer available from Goodman as it is from Daikin and Amana. In the models that are the same, Goodman is the least expensive. This gives customers options.

Pro Tip: Choose a Proven Installer – We’ll help

Sure, you can get the same equipment at a lower price if you choose Goodman, but the Goodman brand can be installed by a greater range of installers – so installation quality varies more. There’s more information on this subject below.

If you choose a Goodman air conditioner, we’ll help you get it installed by a well-qualified and certified professional.

Goodman ACs – What’s Available?

Five units. Two are two-stage ACs; the rest are single-stage. Goodman makes matching indoor coils for all its units.

Goodman makes an impressive range of Clean Comfort branded air purifying and humidity control accessories. They include media filter, True HEPA filter, an electronic air cleaner and a UV light.

Clean Comfort also has humidifiers and a dehumidifier that can be included in your Goodman HVAC system (or any system). There is a heat recovery ventilator, HRV, for cold climates and an energy recovery ventilator, ERV, for other climates. Clean Comfort products are available for Amana systems too.

Goodman Air Conditioner Pros & Cons

As with most brands, there are good and bad points to be concerned about with Goodman. However, there are several reasons why Goodman is one of the best-selling brands – the quality is good, and the cost is even better.

This overview table shows available models and details.

Goodman AC Pros & Unique Features

Here are a few things that stand out from our reviews of each model.

A great compressor: The GSXC18, Goodman’s best AC, uses the best two-stage compressor available. The Copeland 2-stage UltraTech scroll compressor is considered the gold standard. Copeland compressors are used by more brands and are installed in more ACs and heat pumps than any others – by far.

Innovative indoor coil: The AlumaFin7 Coil is an all-aluminum coil including fins and tubes. First, because there are no dissimilar metals, corrosion and leaks are reduced.

Secondly, the coils are smaller, more compact. Refrigerant lines are smaller at 7mm vs 3/8” and they are internally grooved. These innovations produce better contact with refrigerant and a higher volume of heat transfer. The grooves agitate the refrigerant to increase absorption of heat.

Currently, the AlumaFin7 coil is only used in the GSXC18. We expect that eventually it will be used in other models too. If you get Goodman AC price estimates from local dealers, that’s something to ask about.

Goodman’s CoolCloud app offers remote Bluetooth diagnostics using a smart device. This means you don’t have to wait for a repair technician to show up and diagnose the problem and then go chase the part while you wait and sweat. The problem can be diagnosed remotely, and in a short time, a technician shows up with the right part to make a one-stop repair.

Refrigerant: The units are charged for up to 15 feet of refrigerant line. In many installation, this reduces installation cost.

Here are 4 additional ways to look at Goodman air conditioner benefits.

#1 Energy Management

Three units are Energy Star certified, the GSXC18 is certified in the 2, 3 and 4 ton models.

The GSXC16 and GSX16 models are certified Energy Star.

At its core, energy management is about the compressor – how efficiently it moves refrigerant through the system and uses electricity to do it.

A two-stage compressor is more efficient for this reason: It runs on the low stage, which is 65% capacity, most of the time. Obviously, if the job of cooling and dehumidifying your home can be accomplished at the lower stage, it will use less energy.

Energy management is better yet with a variable capacity compressor – but Goodman doesn’t make one. The Amana AC with a variable capacity compressor is the Amana AVXC20 with an impressive 24.5 SEER.

#2 Comfort Management

Two-stage compressors running at low stage create better temperature balance than single-stage models, though not as good as variable capacity compressors.

So again, you might be more comfortable with a 2-stage AC. That’s the second advantage, but of course, 2-stage models cost significantly more.

ComfortBridge communicating technology – Goodman offers ComfortBridge on its GSXC models.

Here’s how this technology differs. In standard operation, the thermostat “tells the AC” when to turn on and off and what stage to run at (if staged).

With communicating technology, the AC sends data back to the thermostat that can produce better performance with the result of better temperature balance and dehumidification in hot, humid summers.

Pro Tip: Skip ComfortBridge. That’s our recommendation. First, it is expensive. Secondly, it’s value is minimum – you probably won’t feel an indoor comfort difference with it. Finally, communicating technology is far from perfected. Sometimes the units stop communicating, and the result is that the system shuts down. Determining and solving the issue can be difficult.

What’s different about ComfortBridge is that the technology is installed in the AC and air handler or furnace, not in a thermostat. You don’t have to use the Goodman ComfortNet communicating thermostat, though most do.

We’ve put together a complete guide to communicating technology for those who want to learn more. There are a bunch of comments from homeowners with communicating technology systems that spell out the good and bad it offers.

For example, KB says, “I have a 4 ton Amana/Goodman AC communicating system with Comfortnet that is 10 years old. Every year It has had issues with lost communication error codes. It works with my Honeywell Redlink system for remote operation but it’s nothing but 2-3 service calls annually. Any savings is lost in the cost of service and component replacement. Never again will I get a communicating system.”

Buyer beware! Talk about these concerns with a Goodman or Amana salesperson. Here’s a good question to ask, “What do your repair technicians think of communicating technology?” Most techs, like the one in this video, are not fans.

#3 Humidity Management

As noted above, Goodman’s Clean Comfort brand has both a humidifier for winter and dehumidifier for summer.

Additionally, a two-stage Goodman system removes more humidity than a single-stage (but again, not as good as variable capacity). When running on low, cycles are longer. More air is pulled over the indoor coil where moisture in the air is condensed onto it and drained away.

If your climate is very humid, then considering a two-stage AC or heat pump is a good idea. Drier air is more comfortable air in summer’s heat and humidity.

#4 Sound Management

Goodman AC noise levels are about the same as most other brands. The 2-stage models are quieter on high than the cheaper models, as you’d expect.

Goodman uses compressor sound blanket to muffle operation noise. It’s nothing special, and the results are average.

Cons – Problems with Goodman ACs

As we’ve said, quality is decent, at least average. The issues with Goodman are more about options and installation.

Options – There are no variable speed models and just one high-performance unit, the GSXC18. Even the GSXC16 is a slight step down both in efficiency and equipment. The 16 SEER unit has a PSC condenser fan which is a little louder and uses more energy than the ECM motor in the 18 SEER model.

Installation is more concerning. We’ve addressed it in the section below Who Installs Goodman?

Goodman Air Conditioner Prices by Model

The System Cost Range is for the equipment only – the outside condensing unit, indoor evaporator coil and the refrigerant line set.

The Total Cost Range includes installation labor charges and dealer profit. Keep in mind that HVAC companies have labor costs, insurance cost and other overhead.

These costs and others are discussed in our Complete HVAC Installation Cost Guide called What’s the Fair Price to Replace your HVAC System in 2023.

Goodman Air Conditioner Prices by Size

Once you know what size AC you need, this table will show you your cost options. We updated the table in February 2023. It shows the average cost of a Goodman 16 SEER AC with matching coil, ECM air handler or furnace and programable thermostat.

Getting the size right is crucial. We recommend asking the installer to do a Manual J Load Calculation. The test considers home size and layout, window and door type and number, insulation values, other home factors and, of course, your local climate.

AC Unit SizeHome SizeSystem CostSystem Installed Cost
1.5 ton600 - 1000 sf$2,110$4,150
2 ton1001 - 1300 sf$2,190$4,280
2.5 ton1301 - 1600 sf$2,270$4,570

4 ton2201 - 2600 sf$2,740$5,120
5 ton2601 - 3200 sf$3,050$5,310

The “Home Size” column is a very rough estimate. The warmer your climate is, the bigger the AC must be relative to house size. You can use our AC Sizing Calculator to get a suitable size in a minute.

Goodman Warranties

Goodman has maintained a tradition of backing its equipment with the best warranties in the industry. For example:

The GSXC18 and GSXC16 ACs come with a Lifetime compressor warranty plus a 10-year unit replacement warranty. If the compressor fails in the first decade, Goodman will replace the entire condensing unit, not just the compressor.

GSX models have a 2-year replacement warranty on the compressor. That’s a new warranty offered in the last few years.

All Goodman ACs have a 10-year general parts warranty.

Did you know? Labor is not covered under most warranty claims. You pay the labor, and it can add up. Our Warranty Guide has complete information about warranties, whether extended warranties like Goodman Asure are a good idea and other useful tips.

Buying Goodman ACs Online: Is that a good idea?

Goodman allows most of its equipment to be sold online directly to homeowners. Few other brands – and no major brands – have a similar policy.

There are a few concerns with this.

1). Most homeowners cannot install their own AC because a refrigerant handling certification is required to charge a system with refrigerant. Now, as we noted, most Goodman ACs come with enough charge for 15 feet of refrigerant line set. If the distance is greater than 15 feet, refrigerant will be added.

Tools and testing equipment is needed too. Get refrigerant level wrong, and your AC won’t properly cool and might break down prematurely.

2). If the homeowner chooses the wrong size condensing unit and indoor coil, the system won’t do its job. See our AC Size Guide for the importance of proper sizing.

3). Many installers won’t install an AC they didn’t sell. Profit, liability and other reasons mean you might have difficulty finding an installer.

4). The warranty is voided on DIY installation

Goodman says the following, and all AC brands have a similar policy:

“No warranty coverage is offered on Goodman brand equipment purchased by consumers over the Internet, including web-based auctions, telephone or other electronic means, unless the unit is installed by a dealer adhering to all applicable federal, state, and local codes, policies, and licensing requirements.

This policy is necessary to ensure that Goodman brand equipment is installed properly, in compliance with applicable laws, rules and codes, and in a manner that addresses safety concerns and the proper performance of Goodman brand equipment.”

Who Installs Goodman?

Anyone with an HVAC certification.

Unlike most major brands, Goodman does not have a Factory Authorized Installer designation.

As a result, it is difficult to identify a qualified, experienced Goodman installer. Goodman suggests reading online reviews and checking with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Goodman AC Installation Tips

Our recommendation is to use our Free Local Quotes service. It is free. And you are not obligated to work with the installers that provide you with a written estimate.

The installers are pre-screened for certification and experience.

Look for a certified NATE installer. NATE, or the North American Technician Excellence certification, is an independent training and certification organization. When you get multiple estimates, ask about NATE certification. We recommend using a NATE-certified installer for your Goodman AC.

  1. I have noticed the higher cost involved for a Goodman, has appeared to result in less satisfaction.
It is in my opinion some doing the installation aren’t professionals at all, and are lacking a proper evaluation, or professionalism before recommending a particular Goodman unit for installation.
Things to be considered is the over all square footage of the structure.
These units are designed to run efficiently if there’s proper amount of runs.
Example no unite should be run with less than 5 runs, otherwise one risks the outside coil freezing up.
Next placement of the runs in the trunk line is as important, I have seen so many times of prior installations from other manufacturers, and HVAC installers, that placed a run far too close to the unit.
One should leave at least the first 4 feet empty.
A good installer will pay special attention to their connections of each run, this is very important, most often over looked.
Many times failure of a unit to properly cool is because of a failure to properly install the flex to the trunk line.
I have been in many attics, whereas every flex to trunk line (aka duct, either metal or fiberglass board) was poorly installed.
I myself prefer to use appropriate tape on 4 corners to hold the flex onto takeoffs, then use several zip it screws around the flex to take off.
I can then properly use a strap, and tape it off securely.
After each run has been installed in this manner, one should use a Mastic product according to local code.
This Mastic is painted on using a paint brush, and is basically a sealer to secure the product and remove any potential leaks.
This will result in better efficiency, during heating/cooling.
As with thermal dynamics, one much consider air flow of heat/cooling may take some time depending upon the distance of the trunk line, since objects such as the flex, takeoff, and duct work will become more efficient based on the temperature of the object in which the air is flowing.
Next the R rating of the insulation of the structure.
Next sometimes the problems occur to a system breaking down from an outside cause, this can range from bad electrical wiring, which is most often the case.
Since Goodman has various built in protections, these protections are designed to burn out either a capacitor, or a transformer, both the majority of times is associated with electrical problems in home, and not of the Goodman unit.

  2. This is good info that seems objective and unbias toward any certain brand. But why is there no date on the article? It would be helpful to see a date so we (readers) could keep that in mind as we see the total cost for installed systems. Labor cost changes over the years.

  4. I had a Goodman installed in 2015 by a local company. I have done some research because I am having to move and found out that I was totally cheated by this contractor. I am a senior citizen and was taken advantage of. He charged me 6500.00 for the product and installation. Now I have found out that the warranty does not cover it once I move. A total rip off and I have called him twice to service it and he never called back. Maybe you should do more background checks on your installers. And so should I, but this will give your company a bad reputation.

  7. This website was the most informative of all.
I’m a Dual (Commercial and Residential) General Contractor. I am anticipating more obligatory changes to the requirements for energy savings in construction.

New (to me anyway) upgraded systems were described and compared in enough detail to make decisions about product choices.

  10. I had a Goodman unit installed in my manufactured home about three years ago.when I came back this time after a extremely humid summer in Florida evidently I set the air-conditioner too high and it did not come on to clear the moisture out of the houseAnd consequently there was surface mold on all of the wood and it was very musty smelling. Can I add a humidistat to the Goodman unit there was one in the home before I bought it but when the technician installed the new air-conditioner he took out the humidistat. Please give me the information about a humidistat being attached.

  12. There was one error on the Model Analysis for the DSXC16. The Condensor Fan Motor according to Goodman Spec says it is a Two-speed. The above it lists it as a one speed. This is a minor misprint, but shows that the 16 and 18 a very similar units.

    (From DSXC16 Manual)
    Standard Features
    • High-efficiency two-stage scroll compressor
    • Two-speed PSC condenser fan motor
    • Integrated communicating ComfortBridge™ Technology

  13. The temperature is over 100 degrees every day now and my 2 year old Goodman GSXC16 will not turn on. The installer has talked many times to Goodman tech support people but nobody seems capable of fixing the problem. I called Goodman Mfg. direct and they refused to give any help. If you have a difficult problem don’t expect any help. And for that alone I would not buy another Goodman system. A good company that sells a product for many thousands of dollars should be able to solve complex problems or replace the faulty system.

  14. We just had new furnace and air conditioning installed. Air conditioning is horrible. It cools the house but the humidity is horrible‼️‼️‼️ The lower you turn the temp, the higher the humidity gets. At 74, humidity it 54%. At 72, humidity is 56%, never has it been lower than 52%. My house is starting to get musty. Service men are stumped. I have three lung diseases and humidity for me is a death bed. $14,000 wasted.
