Amana Central Air Conditioner Reviews and Prices 2024

amana air conditioner reviews

Amana makes 8 central air conditioners ranging in efficiency from 14 SEER to 24.5 SEER. The unit with the top rating is one of the most efficient ACs made today.

Amana air conditioner cost is $3,400 – $9,115 for the condensing unit, indoor coil and refrigerant line set installed. Cost factors are AC model, size and factors related to the complexity of the installation and the supplies needed to complete it.

Note: If you’re just beginning your research into central air conditioners, then our Central AC  Guide is the best place to start. It has in-depth information about AC performance, size, efficiency and how these factors allow you to choose the right AC for your climate and indoor comfort preferences.

This Amana central air conditioner review is designed to give you the research needed to consider the right model for your home – and whether Amana is the right brand for you. We recommend getting estimates from several local AC companies, asking questions and getting their input – but knowing the information here gives you a head start.

About Amana – Is it the Same as Goodman?

Yes, it is. And Daikin too. The one difference is that super-efficient 24.5 SEER unit isn’t offered in a Goodman unit.

Amana and Goodman were separate brands until Goodman acquired Amana. Rather than make 2 separate lines, the Amana units were dropped in favor of the Goodman line with Amana logo badges.

Then in 2012, global HVAC giant Daikin bought Goodman – and the Amana brand with it. Daikin did not make residential central split system ACs, and so the Goodman/Amana line is used with Daikin branding.

Daikin pumped R&D money into the company, and now Amana efficiency and quality are very good.

Amana ACs – What’s Available?

Amana makes 8 models. One is a modulating AC – meaning it has a variable capacity compressor. Two of them are 2-stage air conditioners. The last 5 are single-stage models. In short, it has a product lineup very similar to brands like Rheem and Trane, not as large as Bryant and Lennox.

Here is an overview table of the 8 Amana central AC models and specifications.

Amana Air Conditioner Pros & Cons

Here’s a look at the advantages and disadvantages of Amana air conditioners.

Pros – Unique Features

Amana breaks it down in to 4 categories:

1. Energy Management

This is about energy efficiency, and the compressor is the key to efficiency as well as indoor climate control, sound control and the price of the AC.

Like most top brands, Amana offers air conditioners with three compressor performance levels.

Variable capacity compressor: The AVXC20 sports Amana’s variable capacity, aka variable speed or modulating, compressor.

It’s also called an inverter-driven compressor and it is a direct result of Daikin’s ownership of Amana. Daikin is on the cutting edge of the development of energy efficient compressors. It has used inverter-driven, variable speed compressors in its ductless, mini split ACs and heat pumps for decades.

The compressor runs at any capacity from about 35% to 100%. Called Comfort Speed, the technology allows the system to deliver the exact amount of cooling needed to meet the thermostat set point. Almost no energy is wasted, so it is the most efficient system Amana makes – by far.

2-stage compressor: The ASXC18 (19 SEER) and ASXC16 (17 SEER) have two-stage compressors that run at low capacity, or 65%, about 90% of the time. Running at the lower power reduces energy use, so they’re more efficient than single-stage models, though not as efficient as the variable speed unit.

Single-stage compressor: All Amana ASX air conditioners have compressors that run at “full blast” whenever on. This creates the least efficient cooling – though the models are the most affordable.

Please also note: the highest SEER is usually not the best for your house. You can use our seer savings calculator to find the best seer based on your own conditioner.

2. Comfort Management

Comfort management is another way to discuss indoor climate control. Hot, humid air is uncomfortable in summer. Cool, dry air is much preferred.

Some AC systems provide better comfort management than others. What’s true in efficiency is true in climate control.

Top performance: Air conditioning systems with a variable capacity compressor deliver better temperature balance, and they remove more humidity than single-stage and two-stage systems.

This is because the compressor runs at exactly the speed needed to meet thermostat demands. That’s the temperature part of it.

Humidity control is better with a variable capacity compressor because the AC cycles are longer than those of single-stage and two-stage units.  The long cycles move the air more consistently through the system, so more moistures is condensed onto the coil and drained away.

2-stage compressors and single-stage units: Temperature and humidity control are better with a two-stage unit than a single-stage AC, but neither can match the climate management of a variable capacity air conditioner like the Amana AVXC20

ComfortBridge communicating technology is available on the three models ending in “c,” which stands for communicating.

These variable capacity and two-stage air conditioners work with an Amana or Goodman communicating furnace to optimize indoor climate control.

The Amana/Goodman system is a little different. Rather than the technology being in the thermostat, it is in the components, as the ComfortBridge Guide explains.

This is done by sending data from the AC to the control board of the furnace – two-way communication that determines which speed or stage the unit runs on.

Standard system ACs are controlled by the thermostat without sending data back – one-way communication.

The upgrade to a communicating system – AC, furnace and thermostat – can cost more than $1,000 depending on the model and size. The upgrade in indoor comfort might or might not be noticeable compared with a non-communicating two-stage unit. The increased efficiency will produce slightly lower energy bills – not enough to cover the cost of the equipment over the course of the system. There is more information in the “cons” below.

Smart Home: Apart from concerns about communicating technology, SmartBridge is whole-house smart technology. The WiFi app gives you the ability to control all connected devices like lighting, security, appliances and all heating/cooling functions.

3. Humidity Management

Staged cooling, because it runs at less than 100% capacity, produces longer cycles. As a result, air passes over the cold indoor coil at a rate more conducive to condensing moisture out of it.

The two 2-stage Amana air conditioners strike a good balance between affordability and good humidity control in warm, muggy climates.

4. Sound Management

Amana uses similar features to other brands to lower noise – sound blankets and insulation within the condensing unit.

The results are about average. Two-stage and variable speed units running at a lower stage/speed are quieter than single-stage air conditioners. If sound is a major factor in your buying decision, then consider one of these models.

Cons – Problems with Amana ACs

Communicating technology can stop communicating, and it can be difficult to solve the issue. One of our readers, KB, shared their experience with Amana communicating technology:

“I have a 4 ton Amana/Goodman AC communicating system with Comfortnet that is 10 years old. Every year It has had issues with lost communication error codes. It works with my Honeywell Redlink system for remote operation but it’s nothing but 2-3 service calls annually. Any savings is lost in the cost of service and component replacement. Never again will I get a communicating system.”

See our Communicating vs Non-communicating Guide before choosing a system with this technology.

Amana Warranties

Amana air conditioner warranties for the top four models – AVXC20, ASXC18, ASXC16 and ASX16 – are among the best available.

The compressors in those units are covered with a Lifetime unit replacement warranty for the original owner.

All other models have a 10-year warranty on the compressor including 2-year unit replacement.

If the compressor fails while under warranty, Amana will provide a complete condensing unit, not just a new compressor.

All other Amana AC parts warranties are 10 years.
