The Best Wall Air Conditioner and Heater Combination

Best Overall

#1 Senville SENL-12CD 12k BTU Air Conditioner Heat Pump

Top ratings from verified users, excellent features and the fact it is available in a bunch of sizes to fit any space make this an easy choice for our #1 ductless heat pump / #1 wall mounted air conditioner with built-in heating.

If you want a Senville, but in a different size, choose the Check Price button, and select the unit you prefer. It’s simple – Click & Pick your size.

These units are part of the top-selling Senville LETO series that is the #1 Best Seller on Amazon.

This unit requires pro installation, so get Free Local Quotes today.

The Senville LETO Series could easily be our Best Value series too, because cost is very competitive.

Senville SENL-12CD Air Conditioner Heat Pump

Efficiency: 19 SEER cooling; 9.5 HSPF heating. This is an Energy Star certified mini split heat pump.

BTUs: We chose the 12,000 BTU unit to showcase, but Senville makes the same series in 9k, 18k, 24k BTU models. They are just as good!

Zone Size: This unit cools and heats up to 700 square feet, but the other sizes are designed for up to 400 (9k BTUs), 1,000 (18k model) and 1,500 (24k heat pump) square feet.

Features: There are several features that stand out with this model.

  • 4 performance modes: AC, heat pump heating, Fan-only and Dehumidifier.
  • Fan-only mode moves the air when temperature is comfortable.
  • Dehumidifier mode removes moisture from the air without making it colder – ideal for cool, damp days.
  • Pulls in heat when outside temperature is as low as 5 Fahrenheit.
  • Inverter compressor that optimizes efficiency and minimizes noise.
  • The 9k and 12k models are offered in both 115V and 230V models. Generally speaking, a 230V model puts less stress on your electrical system and the AC/Heater, so it is more durable. The downside is that installation cost might be slightly higher since a dedicated electrical circuit, meaning just for the system, will need to be installed.

Pros: Energy Star efficiency, performance modes to match your indoor climate and make it comfortable all year, good quality and value, highly rated, multiple size and 115/230V options.

Cons: This isn’t a WiFi unit, and you need pro installation which typically costs $800-$1,500 or more based on a range of factors.

See our Mini Split AC & Heater Buying Guide for full details on installation and more.

Why it is One of the Best: Two main reasons – it’s tremendous quality and high efficiency. Close to 95% of those using the Senville LETO ductless heat pump recommend it to others.

What Users Say: “Impressive cooling in our 1,000 square feet home…Plenty of heat in temperatures near freezing outside…Manual on the 24k model is wrong…Perfect for our “tiny home.”

Bottom Line: The LETO Series of Senville wall mounted heat pumps offers excellent quality, a range of efficient sizes and good performance. Remember, Click and Pick to choose the size you need for your heating and air conditioning requirements.

Best Small Mini Split

#2 Cooper & Hunter Mia Series 9k BTU AC/Heating System

This is an ideal wall mounted AC/heater for rooms that don’t get enough air conditioning or heat from the primary HVAC system.

It is also designed for small additions, insulated garages and workshops, small cabins and more. It’s versatile, but not very big, serving spaces up to about 350 square feet depending on insulation, outside temperature and other factors.

Cooper & Hunter 9k BTU AC/Heating System

Efficiency: 19 SEER Cooling; 10 HSPF Heating / Energy Star certified.

BTUs: 9,000

Zone Size: Up to 350, less in extreme weather or poorly insulated rooms.

Features: WiFi is easily added to this unit, so it can be monitored and controlled remotely. Want the house cool when you get home without wasting money by running the AC all day in an empty house? Use the app to turn on the air conditioning an hour before you get home, and you’ll be efficient with your energy use and cool too. Others include:

  • Efficient inverter compressor.
  • Turbo Mode speeds initial cooling and heating.
  • Sleep mode reduces energy use at night.
  • 24-hour timer for convenience.
  • Humidifier Mode removes moisture without cooling the air.

Pros: Excellent efficiency, quiet operation with the inverter compressor, the dehumidifier mode is nice in cool/clammy weather. The Auto-Clean mode cleans the coils to help prevent mildew.

Cons: The largest concern about a 9,000 BTU ductless heat pump is capacity – many homeowners make the mistake of buying a unit that is too small. We recommend this unit as a wall mounted AC and heater combo for a bedroom, home office or similar space that can be closed off from the rest of the house. Size it right, and this unit will do the job.

Why it is One of the Best: It is built with quality components and is backed by a very solid 7-year compressor warranty and 5-year parts warranty.

What Users Say: “A lot more affordable than our Mitsubishi model but a little louder…good humidity control…works well in our addition…WiFi doesn’t always connect.”

Bottom Line: Save money and get good reliability with this Cooper & Hunter mini split heat pump.

Best DIY – 12,000 BTU

#3 MRCOOL DIY 12k BTU Ductless Heat Pump

DIY! DIY! DIY!

If you are a do-it-yourself enthusiast, MrCool is a brand to consider. There are a few others out there, but MrCool (MRCOOL – so annoying) combines quality and easy if installation – truly a solid DIY choice.

Fwiw, this MrCool heater air conditioner combo wall mounted ac unit, or ductless heat pump, is an Amazon’s Choice unit with excellent ratings from verified purchasers.

MRCOOL DIY 12k BTU Ductless Heat Pump

Efficiency: An impressive 22 SEER and 10 HSPF. It’s Energy Star certified.

BTUs: 12,000 BTUs of heat per hour moved from inside your home to the outside, or the opposite when you want heat indoors.

Zone Size: Up to 500 square feet in moderate weather, less in extreme heat or cold.

Features: This is a smart mini split heat pump. It works with Alexa and Google Assistant with Apple and android apps. Other things to like are:

  • Variable capacity inverter compressor keeps temperatures evenly balanced
  • Follow Me remote with sensor – which means that the unit goes by the thermostat sensor in the remote, not on the unit. It won’t stop heating or cooling until the air around the remote is the temperature you prefer. Keep the remote nearby, and you’ll be comfy in any weather.
  • Energy-saving Sleep Mode will gradually reduce energy use while you sleep – but take note, the room will get cooler in winter and warmer in summer. If you’re particular about room temp for sleeping, this mode is a bad idea.

Pros: It is extremely efficient. And if you prefer smart devices, this unit satisfies. The 7-year compressor warranty and 5-year parts warranty are both very good relative to other brands.

Cons: This is the most expensive brand on our list. The high efficiency and smart features are the primary cause. It’s also very high quality, so very dependable.

Why it is One of the Best: Tremendous efficiency, excellent quality and smart features.

What Users Say: “Has worked flawlessly for 500+ hours of AC…Undersized for 1,200 square feet – so buy the 18k model if necessary…Cheap housing on copper line set.”

Bottom Line: This unit requires moderate DIY skills. And there is money to be saved.

Best Quality/Cost Value

#4 Cooper & Hunter Mia Series 12k BTU AC/Heating System

Cooper & Hunter doesn’t have the name recognition of Mitsubishi, Daikin or even MrCool. Not yet. It’s a brand committed to producing quality wall mounted AC/Heater combination equipment, aka, mini split heat pumps. Here are the details to compare.

Cooper & Hunter 12k BTU AC/Heating System

Efficiency: 16 SEER; 9.0 HSPF

BTUs: 12,000

Zone Size: Plus or Minus 500 square feet when the room is adequately insulated, the ceiling is 8’ or 9’ and the room isn’t facing the sun (west or south).

Features: This is a 115V model, and that usually makes installation easier/less costly. It is a quiet unit with top sound levels of 54 decibels for the outdoor/condenser unit and just about 40 decibels for the indoor evaporator unit.

  • A good cold-climate heat pump because it can pull heat from air as cold as 5F
  • WiFi-ready – Buy the USB Adapter to make it WiFi functional
  • One of the better warranties on the market – 7 years on the compressor and 5 years on other parts
  • Kit includes everything you need for installation, so no hidden equipment/supply costs

Pros: Very good quality, all supplies included in the box, WiFi is pretty easy to obtain and set up. The line set is well insulated, so you won’t waste energy transferring heat in and out of your home.

Cons: This unit, like most ductless AC/heater combo models requires installation by a certified tech with a refrigerant license.

Why it is One of the Best: This unit offers good quality, efficiency and convenience (when WiFi is installed). Plus, it is available in several models: 9k BTUs (115V & 230V), this 12k version and a larger 18k/230V model).

What Users Say: “It’s priced right compared with Daikin…I had a couple questions, and customer service wasn’t super helpful…took the tech 5 hours to install for about $800.”

Bottom Line: If you want name-brand quality at a lower cost, consider Cooper & Hunter heater air conditioner wall mounted unit models in the size you need.

Best DIY – 18,000 BTU

#5 MRCOOL DIY 18k BTU Ductless Heat Pump

This is a DIY unit. Do not consider it if you plan to hire an AC tech to install it. You’ll lose money compared to the pro-install models on this list from Senville, Cooper & Hunter and others.

MRCOOL DIY 18k BTU Ductless Heat Pump

Efficiency: 20 SEER Cooling; 10 HSPF Heating. That’s Energy Star certified.

BTUs: 18,000 BTUs of heat removed or added per hour.

Zone Size: 750 square feet…Wait!!!

It will cool and heat space that size in a moderate climate, in a well-insulated home when the room isn’t a kitchen (think range/oven making heat) or the room doesn’t have a sunny West exposure. If any of those traits fit, this unit is better suited to about 500 square feet.

Features: This is a quiet unit with top sound levels of 54 decibels for the outdoor/condenser unit and just about 40 decibels for the indoor evaporator unit.

  • WiFi – Monitor and change settings from anywhere for convenience and optimal energy efficient use
  • Apple and Android app is available
  • Smart technology with Alexa, Google Assistant and other smart platforms
  • DC inverter technology optimizes efficiency and quiet performance
  • Sleep Mode for saving energy when sleeping
  • Low-refrigerant Notification – If you don’t install it properly, or it leaks refrigerant due to manufacturing faults, you’ll be notified to shut down the system for diagnosis and repair before running the unit causes irreparable damage
  • Follow Me is technology growing in popularity – a sensor is placed in the remote control, and the system responds to that sensor, so it won’t stop cooling or heating until the air around the remote is comfortable

Pros: It is one of the most efficient wall mounted AC and heater combo appliances available.

Cons: It costs more than mini split single zone systems that must be professionally installed. Can you save money with a DIY MrCool? It depends on the cost of pro installation where you live and for the cost factors your home presents.

We recommend talking to several local experts and getting estimates from them.

Then you can compare the cost of pro installation of a more affordable unit or DIY installation of a costlier MrCool wall mounted air conditioner and heat pump unit.

Why it is One of the Best: High efficiency, excellent quality and the option to DIY if you want.

What Users Say: “AC bill dropped by 30%…Has worked great for the first 2 years – so far, so good!…Compressor was bad out of the box [but there is some question as to whether the user allowed the oil in the compressor to settle first after shipping. Just a reminder to closely follow the instructions given in the Installation ]…Installation was easy in about 4.5 hours.”

Bottom Line: This unit is one of the most efficient on the list, so your energy use and costs will be lower in the 12-20 years this unit lasts.

Secondly, it costs more, but might save you on the total package if you install it yourself.

If you do not plan DIY installation, DO NOT buy this unit. We hate shouting, but the reason this unit costs more is (partly efficiency) mostly that it is DIY-ready. Why pay for that if you don’t plan DIY installation?

Best Large Wall Mounted AC/Heat Pump

#6 Mitsubishi 30K Wall-mounted Heat Pump

Mitsubishi is a world-renowned brand for quality and performance.

This unit isn’t available on Amazon, but it offers excellent quality and reliability. Your local HVAC contractor will be glad to locate one and install it for you. And besides, Amazon doesn’t offer large wall mounted AC/Heater combos like this one.

The contractors you speak with will have good advice and recommendations for the unit size, efficiency and performance that will meet your lifestyle and budget needs. It always make sense to have an experienced pro to your home to evaluate the conditions and your heating and air conditioning requirements when selecting the right equipment.

Mitsubishi 30K Wall-mounted Heat Pump

Efficiency: 14.5 SEER, 8.2 HSPF

BTUs: Up to 30,000 BTUs. In conventional HVAC/air conditioner terms, that’s about 2.5 tons.

Zone Size: This unit will serve a zone of 1,400 to 2,000 square feet depending on climate and how warm the room generally is.

Features: The wireless remote is a full-function remote. In other words, any adjustments you can make on the unit itself can be made more easily using the remove. In fact, there are several adjustments that can only be made with the remote. Keep fresh batteries handy!!!

  • Anti-allergen filters
  • Auto-restart after a power outage/restoration
  • ECM fan motor is more efficient than standard PSC motors

Pros: This is a large wall mounted air conditioner and heater combination from the manufacturer generally considered the best in the world.

Cons: Cost is higher. Expect to pay 15% to 25% higher for this model than others on the list that require pro installation. Cost of the unit and installation supplies might be less than the MrCool models.

Factors like this are hard to determine in the world of heating and air conditioning. That’s why we recommend talking with several mini split AC heat pump systems in your area.

Get your questions answered. Find the best wall mounted air conditioner and heater system, also called a ductless heat pump, for your application.

Why it is One of the Best: Mitsubishi developed a lot of the best technology in this field. More importantly for today’s consumer, it has remained on the cutting edge of ductless heat pump AC and heating technology.

What Users Say: “We felt it was worth paying more for Mitsubishi and so far (4 years) we think it was worth it…It is a big unit and serves our open floor plan well, but an identical unit on the second floor isn’t big enough to handle separate bedrooms, so we’ll be adding equipment.”

Bottom Line: Pay more; get more. But we can help with competitive local estimates from installers that are licensed and pre-screened for quality workmanship.

Wall Mounted Air Conditioner and Heater Buying Guide with Tips

You’ll make the best decision when you know your needs and options.

Our Ductless Heat Pump Guide gives sizing and efficiency information, plus much more detail about cost, performance and features.

How Much Does a Wall Mounted Air Conditioner Cost with Heater?

Single-zone (one outside unit, one inside unit) systems cost $500 to more than $2,500 for the equipment based on size and quality. The range is about 5,000 BTUs for a very small bedroom or office to 42,000 BTUs for a large space such as an open floor plan house or big office or bedroom suite.

Installation adds another $800-$1,500 more based on the complexity of the job.

That brings potential cost to $1,300 to $4,000 or more for a single-zone wall mounted AC system with heat – a single-zone ductless heat pump system.

Sizing a Heater Air Conditioner Combo Wall Unit – aka a Ductless Heat Pump

Here’s information from our Ductless Split System Guide – the type of system we’re discussing here:

First, find your location on this map of climate zones in the United States.

The warmer your climate is, the more BTUs of air conditioning you’ll need. It’s the reverse for heating in cool climates. Mini-split systems are not a good choice as the only heat source in climates where temperatures are regularly below freezing unless they are rated for sub-zero temps. The Cooper & Hunter Mia Series 12k BTU AC/Heating System on the list will provide enough heat in freezing weather down to 5 degrees Fahrenheit or -15 C / Celsius.

  • Zones 1 & 2 (hot): 22-30 Btu/sq. ft.
  • Zone 3 (warm): 20-24 Btu/sq. ft.
  • Zone 4 (moderate): 18-22 Btu/sq. ft.
  • Zone 5 (cool): 16-20 Btu/sq. ft.
  • Zone 6 (cold): 14-18 Btu/sq. ft.
  • Zone 7 (very cold): 12-16 Btu/sq. ft.

Air Conditioning: Now, let’s translate those numbers into space. Consider total space of 1,000 square feet which might be one very large space or several smaller zones, such as four 250 square foot rooms or zones, each served by an evaporator. Here’s the size of the system you would need in each climate zone to cool the space:

  • Zones 1 & 2 (hot): 1,000 x 24-30 = a 22,000 to 30,000 Btu mini-split AC or heat pump
  • Zone 3 (warm): 1,000 x 20-24 = a 20,000 to 24,000 Btu mini-split AC or heat pump
  • Zone 4 (moderate): 1,000 x 18-22 = a 18,000 to 22,000 Btu mini-split AC or heat pump
  • Zone 5 (cool): 1,000 x 16-20 = 16,000 to 20,000 Btu mini-split AC or heat pump
  • Zone 6 (cold): 1,000 x 14-18 = 14,000 to 18,000 Btu mini-split AC or heat pump
  • Zone 7 (very cold): 1,000 x 12-16 = a 12,000 to 16,000 mini-split AC or heat pump

Heating: The chart must be flipped for heating because the cooler your climate is, the larger the heat pump needs to be. It looks like this:

  • Zones 7 (very cold): 1,000 x 24-30 = a 22,000 to 30,000 Btu mini-split heat pump
  • Zone 6 (cold): 1,000 x 20-24 = a 20,000 to 24,000 Btu mini-split heat pump
  • Zone 5 (cool): 1,000 x 18-22 = a 18,000 to 22,000 Btu mini-split heat pump
  • Zone 4 (moderate): 1,000 x 16-20 = 16,000 to 20,000 Btu mini- heat pump
  • Zone 3 (warm): 1,000 x 14-18 = 14,000 to 18,000 Btu mini-split heat pump
  • Zone 1 & 2 (hot): 1,000 x 12-16 = a 12,000 to 16,000 mini-split heat pump
