How Much Space Do You Need Between the Mini Split and Ceiling?

4” to 6” for most wall mounted air handlers. Gree specifies 6” while MrCool says 15 cm, which is essentially the same (5.9”).

Mini split installation space

We’ve heard pro installers say that 3” is enough. For units less than 15,000 BTU, that might be OK. But where headroom isn’t limited, it is better to allow more space for improved airflow. The extra room also makes the unit easier to service.

So, how close can a mini split be to the ceiling?

The best answer is to always check the installation manual to know how much space you need between the mini split and ceiling for the exact model you are using.

FAQs

What is the smallest size mini split?

6000 BTU.

Only Mitsubishi and Midea currently make units this small. And a unit that small is only capable of cooling up to 250 square feet or for use as supplemental AC in a room not adequately cooled by central AC.

What is the smallest mini split they make?

Most brands begin with a 9,000 BTU mini split which can cool 275 to 400 square feet.

What will a ductless mini split look like in my home?

It depends on the type of indoor unit you choose. Ceiling cassette units mount in the ceiling with a surface flush to the rest of the ceiling.

They are the least noticeable along with ducted indoor air handlers that are installed into the wall or ceiling or can be placed inside existing ductwork if you are switching from ducted to ductless HVAC.

Wall mounted indoor units are not obtrusive. You’ll soon get used to them. And a few feature attractive design and even artwork. The LG ArtCool indoor unit is the first of its kind.
