Coleman and Luxaire are identical HVAC companies that currently make 7 heat pump models from 15 to 21 SEER. This includes a horizontal or side discharge compact unit and six standard split system models.
Both brands are rated in the middle to upper end of the spectrum in quality in major surveys done in 2019 and 2021.
This Coleman and Luxaire heat pump review covers all buying information including cost that should be useful in determining if one of these brands is right for your home.
Luxaire and Coleman Heat Pump Cost
Expect estimates between about $4,500 for the lowest-SEER heat pump in a small size. The largest, most efficient models cost around $12,000 installed. If you have a complete system installed including a new air handler, your total cost can exceed $15,000.
Some brands like Goodman, AirQuest and RunTru are sold to homeowners who want the equipment and will find their own installer. However, Coleman and Luxaire are sold only through local dealers, Certified Comfort Experts, who also install the units. There isn’t a DIY option.
There are full cost details in a table below.
About Coleman and Luxaire
These brands are owned by Johnson Controls, which also makes York heat pumps. York models are also identical to these, with pricing just about the same too.
In recent years, all the Johnson Controls brands have been upgraded to overcome what had been a long-standing problem with leaking coils. Tubing and connection issues would lead to refrigerant leaks and the loss of the heat pump’s ability to properly gather and move heat – in other words, to heat and cool your home.
The issue seems to be largely resolved, and that’s why both brands plus York are getting better predicted reliability ratings from technicians.
Efficiency levels have been improved too by 1 or 2 SEER per model in the last few years.

Comparing Coleman/Luxaire with other Brands
Comparing Coleman/Luxaire heat pumps with other leading brands in the market, a number of factors are put into consideration. This is a detailed comparison in various dimensions:
Coleman/Luxaire heat pumps tend to occupy the middle ground in terms of price with good value as compared to the high-end brands such as Carrier and Trane. They are not the cheapest brands in the market but they are usually of better value than the low-end brands. To give an example, their prices tend to be 10-15 percent lower than Lennox or Carrier on similar models and with similar features.
Coleman/Luxaire units are also quite efficient compared to their competitors: – Their high-end models have SEER ratings up to 20, just like Rheem and American Standard – Although they are slightly lower than the best models of Carrier (which have SEER 24), they are more economical per SEER point – Their mid-range units (14-16 SEER) compete directly with Goodman and York
Coleman/Luxaire warranty package is unique in the following ways: – 10-year parts warranty is standard, just like other industry leaders – Limited lifetime compressor warranty on high-end models is better than some of the competitors – Labor warranty options through dealers are similar to other leading brands
Coleman/Luxaire units compared with other brands: – Similar complexity of installation to most major brands – Similar maintenance needs – Generally good accessibility to repair – Standard compatibility with third party components
Coleman/Luxaire does not excel in one particular category, but they perform well in all the key areas of heat pump performance and worth. They are especially good at providing a balance between quality and price and thus they are a good competitor in the middle range market segment. Their units tend to offer the same features as high-end brands at a lower price, but may not be as readily available depending on the location.
Luxaire and Coleman Heat Pump Features
Here are notable features – though none are especially unique to the HVAC industry.
Performance Options
As you can see in the model analysis, these brands offer 3 single stage (1 stage) models, a two stage heat pump and 3 variable capacity models including the side discharge compact HMH7.
Inverter Compressors and Variable Airflow
The three variable capacity units are fitted with either rotary or variable capacity scroll compressors that speed up or slow down, or modulate, with the heating and AC needs of your home.
These units are typically matched with a variable speed air handler that changes airflow to match the output of the heat pump. The result is greater efficiency and indoor climate control.
The HMH7
This is a ducted heat pump – using an air handler connected to ductwork, but the heat pump’s design is similar to mini split heat pumps that are very efficient and take up less room. This unit is ideal for any location where outdoor space to place or mount the heat pump is limited.
Hx3 WiFi and Full-color Thermostat
While these Luxaire and Coleman heat pumps work with conventional thermostats, some homeowners prefer the Hx3 for its wireless convenience and nice color display. If you opt for this thermostat, your cost might increase by several hundred dollars depending on what other thermostat you consider. There is a zoned version of the thermostat too, if your ductwork is divided into zones that can be controlled separately to optimize efficiency and indoor comfort.
Dual Fuel
Most of these heat pumps can be installed in a system with a compatible furnace. This is usually done in very cold climates where a heat pump might have to rely on the electric heat strips inside the air handler to keep up with heating demands. Using the heat strips for a significant amount of the heating needs is more costly than running just the heat pump or a gas furnace.
Luxaire and Coleman Heat Pump Model Analysis
As you can see, the models are identical – often even having the same model designation.

Prices do vary slightly by individual dealers. They are given some leeway to set their own pricing, so estimates you receive could vary, even from two sellers in your area.
Model Recommendations
The most affordable and best value models are always the single-stage options. However, they aren’t as efficient, so in hot climates you might notice energy bills that are higher than you’d like to see them. If you don’t mind paying more upfront in order to keep costs down, then consider one of the more efficient units – in warmer climates.
The other reason to consider one of the most efficient Coleman or Luxaire heat pumps is that they create a more comfortable indoor climate by keeping temperatures balanced and by removing more humidity from the air during air conditioning cycles (but not during heating cycles, of course). The more stages of performance, the better the climate control. So, the variable capacity/modulating models offer premium comfort.

Echelon HC8B$5,200Denton Texas3800 sqft |
I have been using this unit for the last four years now, and it’s as quiet as the first time I purchased it. The remote operates without faults, and the thermostat is highly accurate. There haven’t been any issues at all, and it hasn’t seemed to run excessively. I have not kept exact records of my heating bill, but I am absolutely confident that it went down after replacing purchasing this Coleman piece of work. I would suggest this model to anyone who needs to replace their unit by any top notch unit. The only advice I would give the manufacturer is to suggest that the future versions include controls so that if you cannot locate the remote or it is destroyed then you will still be able to operate your unit. |
5 ton HC6B 9.0 HSPF$5,680Mississippi3600 sqft |
We have had experience with our Coleman Echelon heat pump for about ten years now. At first, I wasn’t sure of what type of heat pump it was when we first thought of having one. After this ten years, though, I like how it functions and can’t buy any other heating or cooling units. It does a regular job of heating and evenly cooling. We are yet to repair or replace our unit. However, we keep up with some series of maintenance, which is like a must and normal for all heat pumps in order keep your heat pump functioning properly. I would confidently recommend this brand to anyone, and I would also purchase heat pumps from Coleman repeatedly. |
LX Series THJF$4,200Wilmington3000 sqft |
I purchased my unit last month, and the unit performs perfectly well. If this unit is durable, it might help in knowing whether to buy this similar brand or not to. I do not mind paying for any expensive product provided that it will last long enough to give value for my money and with minimal replacements |
LX Series THJD$3,200Virginia2000 sqft |
I Installed my Coleman LX Series in November 2000. It works correctly each day from when it got installed. It is very effective, and it always heats the house to desired temperatures during the very cold days and cools to the needed temperature on the scorching days. The unit has not been repaired after all these years, and the fan runs throughout filtering and circulating the air. I am somehow irresponsible for not getting it serviced though I have changed the filters from time to time. I could not imagine any better system. |
5 ton THGF$3,900Houston1900 sqft |
I am completely satisfied with the minimal noise of my Coleman Comforteer unit. It is quite a comfort itself. My unit dealer understood the craft too well, and the controls are easy and straightforward to use, better than the old unit I replaced. I will purchase this brand again and highly recommend it to my friends. The installer was well experienced and did a perfect job, and I am very satisfied with the equipment. The price is reasonable compared to the durability and high efficiency. |

The repair costs would have been quite high, since the warranty had already expired. What’s more the labor fee super high. abosuletly replace it with other brands. |
