Senville Mini Split Heat Pump Buying Guide

If you’d like more information before purchasing a mini split, this Buying Guide, with FAQ’s will provide you with some answers.

Who is Senville?

Senville, in business since 2005, is a leading retailer of mini split heating and cooling products. They have offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Part of their mission is to minimize greenhouse gases by carrying products that use environmentally friendly R410A refrigerant.

Senville is an Energy Star partner and offers many units that are Energy Star certified, meaning that they meet strict energy efficiency criteria.

What is a Mini Split with a Heat Pump?

Mini splits are named for their split design, meaning the condensing unit with compressor is outside and the air handlers are inside. Mini splits with heat pumps are ductless heating and cooling systems. Mini splits include an outdoor condenser or compressor and, one or more, indoor air handlers.

Single zone units include one condensing unit and one indoor air handler. Multi-zone units include one outdoor unit and two to four indoor air handlers.

Mini splits are capable of providing complete climate control including cooling, heating, dehumidifying, filtering the air and improving indoor air quality.

A mini splits are also more efficient and cheaper to operate than central systems or window air conditioning units.

Why Purchase a Mini Split AC and Heat Pump System?

There are a number of good reasons to purchase a mini split:

When you don’t have central ductwork. A mini split is a great air conditioning and heating solution to a space that has ductless heat such as hot water or radiant heat – or doesn’t have any HVAC system. They are great for additions, converted garages and are growing in popularity for new construction.

Small space solution. Mini splits with heat pumps can provide both heat and air conditioning in new construction such as tiny homes and cabins. They can be used in offices, RVs, garages, workshops, and pole barns.

Customized temperature control. Multi-zone mini splits allow you to customize the temperature in each room. They are the perfect solution when you have rooms that require more or less heating or cooling than other rooms.

For instance, you might need extra cooling in a kitchen or sunroom, but much less in a room that’s only used occasionally, like a guest bedroom.

Adding new space. A single zone mini split can be used in an addition or attic conversion and will be considerably less expensive than adding these areas to the central system.

Supplementing an existing system. A mini split is a great way to add cooling to an area of the home that your central system doesn’t handle, like an attic conversion or an upstairs bedroom. Using the heat pump feature during the winter will reduce your energy costs.

Easy to install. Installation is fairly easy and quick, although professional installation is recommended due to the refrigerants involved. Look for DIY mini split heat pumps if you want to install your own. They’re the only type you can legally install yourself without a refrigerant handling card.

What Features to Consider When Buying a Heat Pump Mini Split

Single or Multiple Zone Units. Understand what size unit you need. Do you have one room or area or multiple areas? Are they large or small? Mini splits are available in single, dual, tri, or quad zone units.

Note: Other factors can influence the size of the unit you will need including the layout of the space, is it open or closed, the quality and amount of insulation within the zone, the height of the ceilings and whether the rooms face the heat – west and south.

Consider the BTUs. A single zone unit at 18000 BTUs will include an outdoor compressor and an indoor air handler, both at 18000 BTUs, but a tri zone unit at 36000 BTUs will include a 36000 BTU compressor and three indoor air handlers at 9000 BTUs each. The number of BTUs the compressor provides is always shared between the number of indoor air handlers.

Air Handler BTUs  Square Feet of Coverage Area

How big a mini split do I need? That’s a common question.

This is a general idea of how  many BTUs you’ll need based on the size of the room or zone. Remember that if the room faces south or west, has high ceilings or is a kitchen where a lot of cooking takes place, expect the unit to serve the lower end of the range. For example, expect a 24,000 BTU mini split to adequately serve 1,000 to 1,150 square feet if the room is extra-warm or has 10-foot ceilings. In fact, when a unit is right on the edge of being large enough, we recommend considering going up one size.

Zone Size in Square Feet Unit Size in BTUs
Up to 400 9,000
401 to 550 12,000
551 to 1,000 18,000
1,001 to 1,500 24,000
1,501 to 2,000+ 36,000
2,001 to 3,000+ 48,000

Consider the SEER. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It’s a maximum efficiency rating and it’s calculated over an entire season. It can be used as a guide to let you know how much comfort you will get to each energy dollar you spend.

Point of reference: The U.S. Department of Energy requires new air conditioning units hold a 13 SEER in cold climates and a 14 SEER in hot climates. An older model air conditioner probably holds about an 8 or 9 SEER.

Anything above a 17.5 is considered an excellent SEER rating.

Will a Mini Split System Save Me Money?

Mini splits with heat pumps can save you at least 30% on your energy bills and here’s why:

  • They transfer heat rather than generating it.
  • They allow you to customize individual room temperatures, especially in rooms that are not used often.
  • You avoid the energy loss that occurs through traditional ductwork.
  • Min splits are at least 30% more efficient than traditional window air conditioners.
  • Energy Star certified systems can use up to 60% less energy than central systems.
  • Installation costs are much less than central systems when there is no ductwork in place. A professional usually can install the system in less than a day. Labor is less intensive and invasive since there is no ductwork involved.

And don’t forget that if you replace an older system with an Energy Star or high SEER system, you may be able to earn an energy rebate from your energy provider. See its website for details.
