If you’ve had a cold or cough in your lifetime, there is a good chance you’ve used a product from Vicks. While they are well- known for their over the counter remedies, the company also has an excellent lineup of affordable humidifiers. In our Vicks humidifier review, we are going to break down the company’s current systems and let you know how they stack up against similar brands.

Vicks Company History

Vicks VapoRub has been around since the early 1900s, and over the years, they’ve produced a variety of goods from their famous salve to cough drops, NyQuil, and nasal spray. It’s safe to say their products have helped millions of Americans through cold and flu season over the years, and their humidifiers are well-regarded by consumers across the board.

Vicks has a relatively large selection of humidifiers, and they cover all the classes. That means you can find vaporizers, evaporative humidifiers, and impeller-based systems alongside a variety of ultrasonic machines. Their catalog currently consists of many older models along with several recently released humidifiers.

Vicks Vaporizers

The most affordable type of humidifier from Vicks are their line vaporizers. There are several budget-friendly systems, but the two smallest come in the form of the Vicks V1750 Waterless Vaporizer and the V1900 Plug-In Waterless Vaporizer.

Vicks Warm Steam Vaporizer

Vicks Warm Steam Vaporizer

The latter plugs directly into a wall socket and has an adjustable vapor control system. Despite its small size, but it’s not as robust as their tabletop waterless humidifier. This humidifier has three scent levels but lasts a bit longer, whereas the Vicks Warm Steam Vaporizer is a full-fledged mini humidifier.

While larger, the Vicks V150 Humidifier has a 1.5-gallon tank, which can last for a full day. It’s suited for medium-sized rooms and has an automatic shut-off feature as well. All three Vicks vaporizers double as night lights and make use of the company’s vapor pads.

Vicks Cool Mist Humidifiers

A cool mist humidifier is often the top choice for small to medium-sized rooms. While these small systems can be a little more expensive than a vaporizer, they generally have more features and will last longer before needing to be refilled. At this time, Vicks has four humidifiers that fall into this category.

Vicks VUL520 Cool Mist Humidifier

Vicks VUL520 Cool Mist Humidifier

The Vicks VUL520 Cool Mist Humidifier is the smallest of the bunch with a half-gallon water tank, although the VEV320 isn’t far behind in that regard. The biggest difference aside from the design is the fact that the Vicks VEV320 is a filtered system and has a break-resistant tank. It also has a 3-year warranty, while the VUL520 has an integrated scent pad heater and comes in three different colors.

The Vicks V600 Humidifier is another filter-less system with multiple settings. It can hold 1.2 gallons and can last up to 33 hours on the lowest setting. Alternatively, the Vicks Filtered Cool Mist Moisture Humidifier VEV400 has a slightly smaller water tank, two settings instead of three, and can only provide humidity for up to 24 hours.

Features on humidifiers in this class vary somewhat from one model to the next. All are self-regulating, and auto shut-off is an option as well, but the price difference can be fairly significant depending on where you purchase one of these models.

Vicks Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifiers

Vicks Sweet Dreams Cool Mist Humidifier

Vicks Sweet Dreams Cool Mist Humidifier

The first model we want to touch on from the company’s Ultrasonic collection is the Vicks Sweet Dreams Cool Mist Humidifier. The VUL575 is built for use in a child’s bedroom, so it’s quiet but can also project nine different images from three themes on the ceiling. It has a 1-gallon tank and is in-line with the Vicks CoolRelief Cool Mist Humidifier from a specifications standpoint.

The CoolRelief VUL600 is a little taller and has a 1.2-gallon tank, but both systems are geared towards medium-sized rooms and have easy to clean tanks. The Vicks Ultrasonic V5100N has the highest capacity water tank out of all of their systems at 1.5 gallons but also has the shortest warranty at 1-year.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Vicks EasyFill Cool Mist Humidifier VUL570. While it’s one of their more expensive systems, it can be filled in two ways, so you can remove the 1.25-gallon tank or simply fill the system from the top. It has the same set of features found on the rest of the models in this class, but the longest runtime of all their humidifiers at up to 36 hours.

Vicks Evaporative Humidifiers

Evaporative humidifiers are an interesting alternative to cool mist systems and vaporizers. Vicks currently has two models to choose from in this class, and they share plenty of similarities when it comes to the technical specifications. Both have 1-gallon tanks, can handle a large room for up to 24 hours, and have an excellent 3-year warranty. That’s where the similarities end, however, with the Vicks V3700 and V3900.

The Vicks Starry Night V3900 Humidifier is another kid-friendly system that lives up to its namesake by projecting images of stars onto the ceiling at night. The projector is controlled independently as well, so they can see the stars without using the humidifying feature.

Vicks V3700 Germ-Free Cool Moisture Humidifier

The projector is a great feature for kids that helps make the V3900 unique, just like the Vicks V3700 Germ-Free Cool Moisture Humidifier. This one isn’t as fun, but still ideal for kids thanks to a built-in UV filter. The V3700 can kill up to 99.9% of bacteria, mold, and fungus in the water tank, which ensures your humidifier is free of germs.

Vicks Warms Mist Humidifiers

Vicks VWM845

Vicks VWM845

If you’re interested in a warm mist humidifier, there is only one option from Vicks with the VWM845. The Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier is built to accept inhalants from Vicks through a medicine cup and sports a filter-free design. It’s capable of running for up to 24 hours thanks to its 1-gallon tank and is adjustable like the rest of the premium humidifiers from Vicks.

Vicks Humidifier Features

Humidifiers aren’t necessarily known for having lots of bells & whistles, and what’s available from a company usually depends on the price of the machine. With Vicks, that means you’re looking at a basic set of features and nothing that would be considered high-tech.

Dual-Slots for Vicks Pads and automatic shut-off are two of the company’s top features and something you’ll find on most of their systems outside of their vaporizer humidifiers. Auto shut-off is a feature you’ll be thankful for, and the same goes for humidifiers with rotating or adjustable nozzles. Those are a bit rarer, although most humidifiers from Vicks allow you to adjust the levels to a degree.

Having humidifiers for children that can project images is a bonus, but something you can find from other brands as well. Water tanks on Vicks humidifiers range from around a half gallon to 1.5 gallons while the runtime varies between 18 to around 36 hours.

Vicks Humidifier Reviews

While it wasn’t easy to track down which Vicks humidifiers are still available, honing in on honest reviews was even tougher. That’s due in part to the affordable price tag on some of their systems, along with the fact there are hundreds to thousands of reviews for most models.

In our research, we found consumers were pleased with the performance on most models, although their cool mist humidifiers had the highest ratings as a group. Their Ultrasonic series is relatively new, so there aren’t many reviews on these systems aside from a few exceptions. As for their Evaporative humidifiers, parents were happy with the Starry Night humidifier, while the V3900 isn’t nearly as well-regarded.

The company’s vaporizers are a mixed bag with a general lack of reviews aside from the V150SGN. That seems to be one of their lower-ranked systems, while the Warm Mist Humidifier is among the best-reviewed humidifiers from Vicks. Overall, we feel their systems provide good value for the money, and most problems were related to quality control or human error.

Vicks Humidifier Warranties

While Vicks has more affordable humidifiers than similar brands, it may surprise you that they have one of the better warranty programs as well. We were able to find warranty information on 90% of their products, and most have guarantees that range between 2 – 3 years. That’s a bonus, especially if longevity is a concern, although there’s another thing to keep in mind.

The ability to repair something yourself can save you a lot of money once a warranty expires. You’ll find a wealth of replacement parts for dehumidifiers, central HVAC systems, and even window-mounted AC units, but they aren’t as easy to acquire with small humidifiers. Simply put, if you plan to purchase a humidifier from Vicks and there’s an issue, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to find parts.

The Pros and Cons of Vicks Humidifiers

Despite the fact that most of the humidifiers from Vicks won’t break the bank, it’s a good idea to consider the pros and cons given the amount of competition in this niche. Thankfully, that’s simple with Vicks.

The biggest advantages of purchasing a Vick’s humidifier are the warranties, their reliability, and the pricing. Their systems are also attractive and easy to use. We found they have a more varied selection than other brands, with a few exceptions as well.

On the downside, the features are limited, and you won’t find any systems that can go longer than 24 hours on high. The ability to cover a large room would be a stretch with some of these humidifiers, as they are geared towards personal use on bedside tables.

Vicks Humidifier Pricing and Availability

Whether you want to pick up a humidifier from Vicks online or locally, you won’t have a problem. Amazon has a variety of models in stock along with online retailers that have local presences like CVS, Rite Aid, and Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart.

If there’s a particular humidifier you are interested in from our Vicks humidifier review, you can hone in on specific models straight from the company’s website. Vicks humidifiers are easy to find and generally run between $15 to $50 depending on the model and where you shop.

Vicks Humidifier FAQ

Q: Why is the filter in my Vicks humidifier brown or discolored?

A: This is actually common as the filters in these systems are used to remove minerals from the water in the machine. Vicks recommends flipping your filter around regularly to increase its longevity.

Q: Is it safe to use essential oil with my humidifier?

A: It’s possible with some systems, but not with any Vicks humidifier. Adding oil or any other substance to your machine can damage the unit and will void your warranty.

Q: Can I use medication in Vicks humidifiers?

A: Only on some models. Some humidifiers have slots for Vicks VapoPads, while others have built-in medicine cups.

Q: Will I need to buy humidifier cleaner or use special chemicals to clean my system?

A: While you will want to refer to your user manual for the proper way to clean a humidifier from Vicks, distilled white vinegar is safe and often recommended.

Q: Why is there white dust in my humidifier?

A: If you have hard water, it’s not uncommon to find white dust from droplets from Ultrasonic humidifiers. Demineralization cartridges or using different water can remedy the issue.

Q: Is it possible to order any replacement parts for a humidifier from Vicks?

A: you’ll need to contact the company directly to inquire about replacement parts for any of their systems.

Q: How often should I clean my humidifier?

A: Vicks recommends cleaning your system once a week.
