Maytag Gas Furnace Prices and Reviews 2021

maytag gas furnace

Note: Before you dive into the specific brand review, we highly recommend you to read our elaborate Gas Furnace Buying Guide in advance. There are several crucial steps you need to take before you even start to think about the brand.

The Maytag Corporation is an American brand of residential and commercial appliances. Founded in Newton, Iowa in 1893 by Frederick Maytag, it was initially a farm implement company before becoming the Maytag Washing Machine Company. In 2006, Maytag was acquired by Whirlpool Corporations.

Though Maytag is best known for its brand of washing machines and other home appliances, it also distributes a wide range of HVAC products, including central air conditioners, furnaces, and heat pumps. Unlike most other competing HVAC brands on the market who manufactures and produce their own products, Maytag brand HVAC products are manufactured under license by Nortek Global HVAC. This company is also responsible for the manufacturing of equipment under other home appliances brand names, such as Frigidaire, Tappan and Westinghouse.

Maytag’s brand of furnaces includes eleven different one-stage, two-stage or modulating gas furnaces as well as ten packaged units. The brand’s most efficient furnace, the PGC2MQ iQ Drive modulating gas furnace, boasts an AFUE rating of up to 97% while the least efficient model features an AFUE rating of 80%. Because Maytag’s furnaces are outsourced by Nortek Global HVAC, among other companies that also manufacture for other brands, their line of furnaces is not far removed from those distributed by the likes of Frigidaire or Westinghouse, and feature many of the same patented technologies, such as the iQ Drive. Here is a quick navigation of this guide:

Maytag’s Features Analysis

– SmartStart Technology

SmartStart Control Boards featured in certain Maytag gas furnaces are a unique technology that allows the units to learn the heat-up characteristics of the igniter by searching for the threshold of ignition failure. By doing this, it can adjust the interval on the next start up accordingly. This ultimately helps to prolong and extend the life of the igniter.

– iQ Drive

The iQ Drive technology built into iQ branded Maytag gas furnaces allows for those units to operate as efficiently and effectively as possible. Featuring a modulating capacity from 50% to 100%, the iQ Drive furnaces use only as much power as is needed, no more and no less, to comfortably heat your home. With the iQ Drive thermostat, that capacity can further be lowered down to 15% with time proportioning. This technology means homeowners can heat their homes both comfortably and efficiently without waste, all easily controlled by their thermostat.

– iHybrid

For those living in warmer climate, the iHybrid technology featured in certain Maytag packaged units can help eliminate wasteful energy usage and adapt to the changing temperatures. These units primarily employ the use of electricity until the temperature drops to a certain low. Once this happens, the gas fuel takes over. This mechanism allows for the use of electric most of the time—a more efficient form of fuel, not to mention the use of earth-friendly refrigerants. Ultimately, this will help lower heating bills while providing efficient heating that doesn’t have such a negative environmental impact.

Maytag Model Recommendation

When you’re looking for the most cost-effective heating, the strategy is to find the balance between furnace cost and energy costs. Let’s use the zone map to identify efficiency levels for each that strike that balance:

  1. I have been a Maytag HVAC dealer for 19 years, previously Kelvinator, and Frigidaire. All the same machine, each a step above the others either in warranty or cabinet design. I no longer sell any of these furnaces. Why? because my local distributor decided to start carrying Armstrong which is essentially Lennox, under another company, with all of the Lennox inherent design issues. I previously installed Lennox for 20 years, and have installed Rheem / Ruud, Trane, Carrier, Goodman, Coleman, and others most have not heard of. Yes, I have been doing this for 39 years. Those of you who are complaining about Maytag, Kelvinator, Frigidaire, problems, don’t know how lucky you are. I just told my local supplier, who I buy a LOT of equipment from that when I replace MY PERSONAL furnace, I would be installing Maytag. Specifically, the 96%. I don’t care for any of the 80% of any brand. They essentially told me they would practically give me a furnace if I used their brand. Sorry my friends, I really don’t want to spend time working on my furnace, and the issues have been pretty well worked out. If the dang thing is installed correctly its almost bullet proof. Yes, you do have to service it, as you do ANY brand. Change the filter when it gets dirty, clean the flame sensor, clean the drain tubes, you have to do this with ALL of the brands. Use an Aprilaire brand filter cabinet, change it one time a year, and you have a great system. Once again, it’s got to be installed correctly, pay for a good installer don’t go with the cheapest hack company you find, they will screw up any brand because the installer doesn’t care. You deserve to get what you are too cheap to pay for. Those are the real facts, from a real service technician, real installer, real business owner.
