Since Aprilaire produced their first dehumidifier in 1954, the company’s lineup has grown considerably. While that product helped put them on the map, you can now find air purifiers, thermostats, and home automation products in their impressive catalog. They are also one of the top options if you need a dehumidifier for a crawl space or basement in the 70 to 120-pint range.

The History of Aprilaire

Aprilaire’s parent company, Research Products Corporation, has been in business since 1938. RPC was formed in Madison, Wisconsin, and produced water conditioning equipment through the 40s before transitioning to air quality products in 1954. That led to their first Aprilaire dehumidifier, and the company expanded into new areas like solar heating and automatic controls over the next several decades.

Aprilaire introduced another innovation in 1989 with the first automatic humidifier control, but it wasn’t until the year 2000 that all Research Products Corporation air quality products switched to the Aprilaire moniker. At this time, Aprilaire produces air filters, purifiers, thermostats, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and ventilation products. They also provide an interesting service with their Healthy Air System.

Aprilaire Healthy Air System

The Aprilaire Healthy Air System is a new initiative by the company designed to provide true whole house filtration. It’s not a single product, but a multi-pronged approach that utilizes several of the company’s products as a way to keep your air fresh and prevent the spread of viruses.

This system uses a combination of humidity control, air filtration, and fresh ventilation from outdoors to improve the IAQ indoors. You can read more about the process here or find a professional in your area to have an Aprilaire associate assess the situation in your home.

Aprilaire’s Dehumidifier Collection

Aprilaire Dehumidifier

At this time, Aprilaire produces six dehumidifiers, although two are variants. Their lineup ranges from 70 to 130 pints, which is suitable for homes between 2,200 to 7,200 square feet. When it comes to design and functionality, their entire lineup is geared towards below-grade rooms, not living spaces.

All of Aprilaire’s dehumidifiers have the same design, which is industrial. They are commercial-grade systems from that standpoint and built with ease of use in mind instead of features. These systems are designed to be installed in basements areas and are ductable, but not designed to be used in a living room, bedroom, or kitchen.

While you won’t find Wi-Fi connectivity on any of their dehumidifiers, you also won’t find any drain buckets. All systems are designed for continuous drainage, so placement is key. If you don’t have a low-lying drain nearby, you’ll want to invest in a pump to use with these dehumidifiers.

The Aprilaire 1820 is the company’s smallest system with a 70-pint capacity and rated for areas up to 2,200 square feet. While it does resemble the rest of their dehumidifiers, the controls are only front mountable as it has a slightly different design, which allows for easy installation in cramped areas.

Whereas the Aprilaire 1820 is referred to as a crawl space dehumidifier, the Aprilaire 1830 is built for basements and larger areas. It is listed at the same capacity with a rating of 70 pints per day, but is heavier and has more range with a coverage range of 3,800 square feet.

When you get out of the 70-pint range, the specifications are more important, although you will only see minor differences from one model the next. The Aprilaire 1850 and 1852 are also single-speed systems with an airflow rating of 265CFM on high. The 1850 has feet instead of caster wheels and is rated for 5,200 square feet instead compared to 5,000 for the Aprilaire 1852.

On the high end, you’ll find the Aprilaire 1870 with a rating of 130 pints per day. It can cover an area up to 7,400 square feet with a top speed of 310 CFM. While the Aprilaire 1872 whole house dehumidifier is the same capacity and speed, it has casters, is listed at 7,200 square feet. It’s also the only Energy Star certified model from Aprilaire at this time. The table below list models by size.

Aprilaire Dehumidifier Reviews

While you more than likely won’t find Aprilaire’s systems in your local hardware store, it’s not hard to find reviews from verified consumers that own their units. From HVAC and contractor forums to reviews on retail sites, there is quite a bit of information to dig through on this brand’s dehumidifiers.

In our research, we found that most consumers were pleased with the company’s dehumidifiers. They received high marks for ease of use and effectively removing water from rooms, but consumers also appreciated the compact nature of these machines.

A few common complaints about Aprilaire dehumidifiers are the weight and noise level. The weight is to be expected with a well-built system that’s made from metal – not plastic. Reports of high noise levels were low, and shouldn’t be an issue based on the decibel ratings provided by the company.

Replacement Parts for Aprilaire Dehumidifiers

When you’re purchasing a smaller dehumidifier or a budget-friendly system, it’s generally a pain to find replacement parts. Given the nature of Aprilaire’s dehumidifiers, finding parts won’t be an issue if something goes wrong.

We were able to find a number of parts for their units, from temperature sensors and internal control boards to backflow dampers and capacitors for the compressor. What’s available or in-stock will vary depending on the retailer, but there are a wealth of options to choose from across Aprilaire’s entire lineup.

Aprilaire Warranty Policy

Dehumidifier warranties typically range from 1 to 2 years. That isn’t ideal, especially considering these systems are not exactly known for their longevity. With Aprilaire, you’ll get a 5-year guarantee which covers replacement parts that are defective within that period.

Extended warranties are also an option from some retailers if you’re concerned about durability, given the cost of the company’s dehumidifiers. The fact, so many replacement parts are available is a huge bonus as well.

Pros and Cons of Aprilaire Dehumidifiers

It’s difficult to compare Aprilaire dehumidifiers to systems from brands like GE, Honeywell, and other big brands. Their units are more in-line with Santa Fe’s compact systems from a design standpoint, and not built to run quietly in an office or bedroom. With that in mind, here are the pros and cons of Aprilaire dehumidifiers.

Aprilaire Dehumidifier Pros

One of the biggest draws of a dehumidifier from Aprilaire is the fact you can “set it and forget it” so ease of use is high. You can set it to kick on when a specific humidity level is reached, and auto-restart will take over in the event of a power failure. Because of the design, there are no buckets to empty, only a washable MERV-8 filter that you’ll need to clean occasionally.

Their systems are also ductable, and several allow you to set the controls on the top or in the front. Hardwired plugs are an option with select models as well. The build quality and warranty are two more reasons to consider their dehumidifiers, along with the ability to replace all the important parts as needed.

Aprilaire Dehumidifier Cons

While we didn’t see many complaints from consumers in regards to Aprilaire’s dehumidifier systems, there are a few cons you’ll want to be aware of. Unlike most manufacturers, there are no pumps with on their current collection, so think about placement and drainage beforehand. The operating range is a bit higher on the cold side compared to similar models at 50°F, and the price tags make them more of an investment than more traditional units.

Aprilaire Dehumidifier Pricing and Availability

Aprilaire makes dehumidifiers geared towards basements and crawlspaces, which puts them in the specialty category. That means their systems can be a little harder to find than something from Whirlpool or LG, but there are a number of options available both locally and online.

If you want to purchase an Aprilaire dehumidifier locally, the easiest option is to use their “Find a Pro” tool on their website. This will give you a listing of HVAC companies in your area that carry or can order their products.

You can’t purchase units directly from Aprilaire, but you can find them on Amazon along with shops like Sylvane and SupplyHouse.
