Introduction to Lennox Air Handlers

Lennox makes eight air handler models in three series, Lennox Signature (Best), Lennox Elite (mid-level air handlers) and Merit (economy models). This table lists models and features, and it’s a good place to begin your comparison of Lennox vs. Trane, Carrier and Goodman.

1). System Options: All Lennox air handlers except Signature CBWMV are built to work with an AC or heat pump. The Signature CBWMV works only with a boiler. All models offer electric resistance heat strips in 5kW to 20kW packages as an option to be used as supplemental or emergency heat.

2). Communicating HVAC systems: The iComfort S30 and other iComfort thermostats are communicating controls, so the wiring is different than standard thermostat wiring. The thermostat takes in data from outdoor and indoor temperature sensors and the HVAC components to know whether heating or cooling is required. This means that one wire can deliver the command to heat or cool rather than requiring separate wires. A communicating thermostat will only work with communicating equipment, and the opposite is true – non-communicating equipment must be controlled with a non-communicating thermostat (iComfort models are the only communicating Lennox thermostats).

3). BTUH/Tons: Air handlers, also called fan coils, are rated by the BTUs per hour (BTUH) they can move. Some brands list them by BTUH. To compare, 12,000 BTUH = 1 ton.

Lennox Air Handler Features Analysis

The Elite and Merit Series coils (branded Quantum coils) have a copper core surrounded with aluminum tubes and fins. The connections to the copper core are also copper to eliminate the chance of corrosion caused by joining dissimilar metals. This allows the use of these less expensive cores without the risk of corrosion causing expensive repair issues.

The Signature CBWMV is designed for hydronic systems only. Hot water from a boiler enters the air handler and passes over the heat exchanger to heat air circulated through the system by the blower.

Signature Series Lennox air handlers are equipped with extra-thick insulation to dampen operating noise, so they are quieter than most air handlers.

Like most brands, Lennox makes Wi-Fi controls, the iComfort Series, that allow you to monitor and control your HVAC system from your phone, tablet or computer using the free app available for Android and iOS. The iComfort Series also works with Amazon Alexa and Echo devices to provide hands-free voice control such as, “Alexa, set the thermostat to 72 degrees.”
