Goodman Air Conditioner Reviews and Prices 2019

Note: Before you dive into the specific brand review, we highly recommend you to read our elaborate Central Air Conditioner Buying Guide in advance, there are several crucial steps you need to take before you even start to think about the brand.

As a top manufacturer of both residential and commercial air conditioning, Goodman has among the highest quality ACs. The primary focus of Goodman is to ensure comfort, reliability, and efficiency to the customers, without having them spends too much money. Depending on the type of unit you want, Goodman provides a vast variety of air conditioners with different specifications. Air conditioners from Goodman are widely known for their high efficiency as well as the very competitive prices.

Unique Features

1. Low Price but reliable

Goodman offers the most affordable prices as compared to other AC manufacturers such as Trane and Lennox. A 3 ton 14 SEER Goodman AC cost only about $960, its equivalent Trane AC is about $1400-$1500 which is much more expensive. So why can Goodman keep durable and the low pricing in the meanwhile? It is based on their own distributor-dealer sales model and market positioning. So there is no need to worry about Goodman’s quality. That being said, there are certain unqualified Goodman dealers and contractors in the market, we will teach you how to distinguish them in the following part.

2. Compressors With Lifetime Warranty

The reason they offer the lifetime warranty is the revolutionary suction accumulator. The primary reason for compressor breakdown is the accumulation of refrigerant in the suction lines. Any refrigerant in liquid form is trapped in this suction accumulator, ensuring trouble-free compressor operation. Lifetime warranty is good but don’t exaggerate the effect of it. The average life of an air conditioner is 12-15 years, not a lifetime. You still need to pay extra labor fee for any repair after one year.

3. All Aluminum Coils

Now several air conditioning manufacturers are viewing aluminum coils as a potential solution to the industry wide plague of formicary corrosion in copper tube aluminum fin evaporator coils. Goodman is one of these manufacturers. All aluminum coils are lower priced but with the same efficiency.

No High-end Models

The highest efficient Goodman air conditioner is 18 SEER. In most cases, 16-18 SEER is enough for residential using and long-term saving. However, if you want an 18+ SEER or variable cooling air conditioner, we recommend you to check Trane, Carrier, Lennox or American Standard. The highest SEER for Trane and Carrier is 21, and in 2016 Lennox just launch their 26 SEER XC25 air conditioner.

Quality of Contractor Varies Widely

Unlike Trane and Lennox, Goodman doesn’t directly sell units to dealers. There is another tier between manufacturer and dealer, called distributor. The distributor has their own rights to choose dealers. In order to seek for high sales revenue, some irresponsible distributors lower of dealer choosing standards and sell units to unqualified dealers. We heard of more negative feedbacks from Goodman recently and most of them are caused by improper installation. Goodman unit itself is reliable, but finding a reliable contractor is more important.

How to Check Goodman DealersSome Goodman dealers are Authorized as GoodCare Dealers, which means they are able to supply homeowner with the Goodman extended service plan. Another label is called “A-Plus Dealers.” Dealers can only get this label by attending Goodman correspondence course every 6 months. If your local contractor has one of these certifications, you can trust him for the following installation.

Goodman Model Recommendation

a) Goodman SSX16 model

This single stage model with a SEER of 16 is the second best model manufactured by Goodman. The fact this model is energy star rating makes it a reliable source of cooling as this is an assurance that it is a high-quality unit. An efficient scrollable compressor and the communication system from comfort net are additional bonuses on this model. A lifetime warranty for the compressor is exclusive in the residential A/C industry.

b) Goodman DSXC18 model

If you are faced with more humid and noise problem, DSXC model is a good choice. With a two-stage cooling system, you can attain the desired cooling levels with better humid control. The unit will operate at low-stage cooling more often to keep quietness. This energy star rated conditioners are designed to adapt to the comfort net communication way. A lifetime warranty for the compressor is also included for this model.

As we have discussed in our central air conditioner guide, the SEER is the most important parameter deciding the initial equipment cost and future energy savings.

Higher SEER Models can not always pay your money back. We developed a SEER Savings Calculator to help find a better balance between equipment cost and electricity cost. This tool can automatically load your local power rate and yearly cooling hours when using Chrome explorer. You can also adjust these inputs manually to get a more accurate result.

I had a carrier that had done a good job at cooling the house for the last seven years. It started acting up last summer and we thought we would replace it with a Goodman. One of my buddies at work had recommended it, said he’s was 5 years old and still running good. So I went for it and I must say this is worth the trouble. I like the low noise level and the fact that it’s been a while now and I have had no trouble with it.

Using any type of appliance for a long time takes its toll on the appliance and finally, it gives in and you have to get a new one. That’s the case with my old Carrier, I had it for 12 years and once it broke down last summer I decided it was the time I replaced it. I like to look up whatever I what to buy on the internet, see what the reviews are saying. So I got some rave reviews for Goodman and decided to go with it. So far I like what I got. The unit really is what they said it would be. Low noise level, little energy consumption, everything seems to be in order. Let’s see how it goes for the next few months because it’s only been two months since I got it.

My old AC costs too much to run since it last broke so I just decided to dump the thing and get a new one. I went for Goodman. My daughter says they work well. I’ve enjoyed having this one I must say. The energy bill has gone back to a sensible number and the unit doesn’t make a sound. It’s nice having a working AC for a change the house is just perfect now.

My husband is the one who got it. He heard me complaining and thought he’d do something about it. The Carrier we had before had nothing left in it, it kept breaking down and costing us money. We bought this new unit from Goodman and I think my husband made the right choice. It cools the house really well, and I’m glad we have.
$3,790GSX160601Philadelphia2200 sqft
I have had this unit for about 6 months now and I can tell you Goodman have the quality stuff. I haven’t had to deal with any repairs at all, and that’s just amazing. We have a much more comfortable house now because before it would keep getting hot even though the sun was going down. Great job Goodman, I like.

Doesn’t reach my expectations I had high hopes that this would solve my cooling problems but it has come at too high a cost. I have had this unit for 4 months and it has broken down thrice already. I’d like someone from Goodman to help me work this out because it’s not nice at all.
$3449DSXC16 16 SEERSan Diego, CA2800 sqft
Terrible product! I don’t know how anyone is able to recommend this to other people. All it has done for the last month is break down. I have had this unit for a year and a half and now it looks like I’ll need to replace it because this is too costly to keep running. Not impressed.

  • I have noticed the higher cost involved for a Goodman, has appeared to result in less satisfaction.
It is in my opinion some doing the installation aren’t professionals at all, and are lacking a proper evaluation, or professionalism before recommending a particular Goodman unit for installation.
Things to be considered is the over all square footage of the structure.
These units are designed to run efficiently if there’s proper amount of runs.
Example no unite should be run with less than 5 runs, otherwise one risks the outside coil freezing up.
Next placement of the runs in the trunk line is as important, I have seen so many times of prior installations from other manufacturers, and HVAC installers, that placed a run far too close to the unit.
One should leave at least the first 4 feet empty.
A good installer will pay special attention to their connections of each run, this is very important, most often over looked.
Many times failure of a unit to properly cool is because of a failure to properly install the flex to the trunk line.
I have been in many attics, whereas every flex to trunk line (aka duct, either metal or fiberglass board) was poorly installed.
I myself prefer to use appropriate tape on 4 corners to hold the flex onto takeoffs, then use several zip it screws around the flex to take off.
I can then properly use a strap, and tape it off securely.
After each run has been installed in this manner, one should use a Mastic product according to local code.
This Mastic is painted on using a paint brush, and is basically a sealer to secure the product and remove any potential leaks.
This will result in better efficiency, during heating/cooling.
As with thermal dynamics, one much consider air flow of heat/cooling may take some time depending upon the distance of the trunk line, since objects such as the flex, takeoff, and duct work will become more efficient based on the temperature of the object in which the air is flowing.
Next the R rating of the insulation of the structure.
Next sometimes the problems occur to a system breaking down from an outside cause, this can range from bad electrical wiring, which is most often the case.
Since Goodman has various built in protections, these protections are designed to burn out either a capacitor, or a transformer, both the majority of times is associated with electrical problems in home, and not of the Goodman unit.

    • Hi

I can’t agree you more, thanks so much for your detailed feedback of proper installation.

  • This is good info that seems objective and unbias toward any certain brand. But why is there no date on the article? It would be helpful to see a date so we (readers) could keep that in mind as we see the total cost for installed systems. Labor cost changes over the years.

    • Thanks for your feedback, we update the prices each year.

  • I am looking to buy one of your good men AC condensing units and have it installed in the Cape Cod Massachusetts area. Could you either recommend one of your people In contact me via email. I would much more prefer that you call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx as I saw on this page that one of your units installed should cost around $3200

    • Hi Chris

Have you got a quote from our estimate tool?

  • I had a Goodman installed in 2015 by a local company. I have done some research because I am having to move and found out that I was totally cheated by this contractor. I am a senior citizen and was taken advantage of. He charged me 6500.00 for the product and installation. Now I have found out that the warranty does not cover it once I move. A total rip off and I have called him twice to service it and he never called back. Maybe you should do more background checks on your installers. And so should I, but this will give your company a bad reputation.

    • Hi Patricia

Sorry to hear that and may I have the contractor name?

  • I bought a Goodman compressor 2 ton 14 seer won’t work with my previous air handler what am I looking at price wise for new air handler compatible with this unit thank you

  • This website was the most informative of all.
I’m a Dual (Commercial and Residential) General Contractor. I am anticipating more obligatory changes to the requirements for energy savings in construction.

New (to me anyway) upgraded systems were described and compared in enough detail to make decisions about product choices.

  • Please give me the price of package Air Conditioner model 3RTD (Goodman USA) capacity 10 ton cooling 120000 heating 122400

  • Can you recommend a reliable and professional company in the Las Vegas market to install a A/C unit and a heating unit.
I have never heard of Goodman
    Thank you

    • You can use our free estimate tool to find a reliable company. All the contractors are prescreened.

  • I had a Goodman unit installed in my manufactured home about three years ago.when I came back this time after a extremely humid summer in Florida evidently I set the air-conditioner too high and it did not come on to clear the moisture out of the houseAnd consequently there was surface mold on all of the wood and it was very musty smelling. Can I add a humidistat to the Goodman unit there was one in the home before I bought it but when the technician installed the new air-conditioner he took out the humidistat. Please give me the information about a humidistat being attached.

  • If I bought a unit online, could I have a contractor install it? Just pay for labor.
Thanks for the great info. Your site is awesome!

    • Hi

No, most contractors will refuse to do that. We recommend you to find a local contractor to buy the unit.

  • There was one error on the Model Analysis for the DSXC16. The Condensor Fan Motor according to Goodman Spec says it is a Two-speed. The above it lists it as a one speed. This is a minor misprint, but shows that the 16 and 18 a very similar units.

    (From DSXC16 Manual)
    Standard Features
    • High-efficiency two-stage scroll compressor
    • Two-speed PSC condenser fan motor
    • Integrated communicating ComfortBridge™ Technology

    • Thanks for the reminding and just updated it.
