Ducane is Lennox’s economy brand and offers five air conditioners in low to mid-level efficiency.
The models are identical to Lennox models, but sold at a lower price for two reasons.
First, it gives Lennox a product to sell to homeowners that won’t pay higher Lennox brand prices. The profit margin is lower, of course, but it allows the company to make a sale where it otherwise would not have.
Secondly, Lennox equipment is primarily installed by contractors certified by Lennox. Ducane can be installed by any HVAC contractor.
This Ducane air conditioner buying guide has pros/features, cons and costs. We’ve completed these guides for every major AC brand to make your research and comparisons easy.
Ducane Top Features – Ducane Pros
The best thing about Ducane air conditioners is their competitive cost. They compare most closely with Payne and Goodman, though Goodman also makes high-efficiency models.
Here are a few top features.
Single-stage models and one two-stage model are available. The two-stage unit gives you the option of better indoor climate control. It runs on low capacity as much as possible, which produces better temperature balance and less noise. It also removes more humidity than a single-stage air conditioner does.
The Copeland UltraTech scroll compressor is used on the 4AC16LT. It is regarded as the most reliable scroll compressor in the industry.
Installation goes quickly due to panels that are easy to access and wiring done at the factory. These convenience features reduce installation time and cost.
Ducane Air Conditioner Cons
There are a few disadvantages to consider too.
Quality is mediocre with most models. We can recommend the Ducane 4AC16LT, but the others aren’t as reliable as many other units from Trane, Carrier, Heil, Day & Night and others. If you’re looking for a low-cost replacement, Ducane makes sense. When quality and durability top your priority list, consider other brands.
Ducane has parts issues. Like Lennox air conditioners, Ducane models include a higher percentage of proprietary parts than most other brands. And Lennox/Ducane have been notorious for poor parts supplies. If a repair is needed, you might have to wait longer, sometimes a week or more longer, for the part to be available. That could mean going without central air conditioning during a stretch of hot weather.
The most efficient models are 16 SEER. This is fine if you live in a cool or moderate climate. But in very warm regions, a more efficient AC will better control energy use and utility costs.
Read the fine print on the warranties. Ducane advertises 10-year warranties on all models. But when you read the details, it is actually a 5-year standard warranty and a 5-year extended warranty you have to purchase at additional cost. If you don’t buy the extended warranty, then the AC is covered for just 5 years. We do not recommend extended warranties. They are offered by third-party companies that make a handsome profit. In short, they are not worth the cost. If you want a 10-year standard warranty, spend more for a better AC.
Frankly, a 5-year warranty is the sign of a cheap AC. When the manufacturer doesn’t expect it to be dependable over time, why should you?
Ducane Model Analysis and Recommendation
Note: Higher SEER is not Better. Finding the best SEER is a bit tricky but our SEER Savings Calculator can help you find a suitable SEER based on your location.
1). Four models are single-stage ACs. They run at full capacity all the time, which means they are loud and you might feel slight temperature swings.
2). 16 SEER models: The 4AC16LT is the only two-stage model, and it’s easily the best Ducane air conditioner. The 4AC14B is the entry-level AC. The 4AC16L is a midgrade model.
Recommendation: We recommend the 16 SEER models where climates are warm to hot. Choose the two-stage model for better temperature balance and dehumidification.
3). 13 SEER Models: These are not available in warm climates. The AAC13B is the entry-level unit; the 4AC13L is midgrade.
Recommendation: 13 SEER ACs are suited to cool climates where they’re not used much. They are fine for part-time locations like vacation homes where low cost is top priority.
4). On several models, you have the option of a louvered jacket or a welded wire guard jacket. The louvered panels offer better coil protection, but cost more than the wire cabinets.
Ducane AC Prices
This table has two columns:
- The System Only column is the cost of the AC, also called a condensing unit.
- The System Installed price is the cost of the AC, the coil and all installation supplies.
Each Ducane air conditioner model is sold in a range of sizes from 18,000 to 60, 000 BTUs, also called 1.5 to 5 tons.
|Model||System Only||System Installed|
Ducane Air Conditioner Prices by Size
We mentioned size in the last section. Let’s see how these units break down by size.
If you’re shopping for an exact replacement, it will be helpful to know what size your current AC is.
The size might be found in the manual, if you have it. If not, check the metal tag with the model number.
In the model number, look for one of the numbers in the first column below, regardless of the brand. It refers to the number of BTUs in 1,000s. For example, an 18 represents 18,000 BTUs or 1.5 tons.
If you don’t know the size, then the air conditioning company you choose should do a load test – Manual J is the most common.
In the table below, price rises with efficiency and quality in each size range.
|AC Unit Size||Home size||Equipment cost||Installed Cost|
|1.5 ton||Up to 1,000 sf||$850-$1,835||$1,685-$3,800|
|2.0 ton||1001-1300 sf||$1,035-$2,000||$1,800-$3,950|
|2.5 ton||1301-1600 sf||$1,150-$2,295||$1,975-$4,200|
|3.0 ton||1601-1900 sf||$1,365-$2,500||$2,200-$4,425|
|3.5 ton||1901-2200 sf||$1,565-$2,615||$2,335-$4,500|
|4.0 ton||2201-2600 sf||$1,680-$2,715||$2,485-$4,645|
|5.0 ton||2601-3200 sf||$1,735-$2,800||$2,800-$4,785|
* The “Home Size” column is a very rough estimate. The warmer your climate is, the bigger the AC must be relative to house size. Have a load test done to get your air conditioner properly sized. You can also use our AC sizing calculator to get a relatively accurate size.
