Amana Heat Pump Reviews and Buying Guide

Note: Before you dive into the specific brand review, we highly recommend you to read our elaborate Heat Pump Buying Guide in advance, there are several crucial steps you need to take before you even start to think about the brand.

What’s Amana?

The Amana pump is one of the top quality brands currently available in the market. They are good quality heat pumps, which are a must-have for owners who love the quality. The heat pumps are made by same company, which manufactures Goodman heat pumps. As a result, most of the heat pumps from these two brands are quite similar. The Amana heat pumps have some of the best warranty terms of any HVAC system. They are renowned for being durable and reliable. In addition, some of high-end Amana heat pumps can help one cut their electric bill tremendously.

Accumulator

Accumulator

A good compressor is what makes up a good heat pump. However, keeping this compressor trouble free can be quite a challenge. The heat pump utilizes a substance known as refrigerant. In order for this machine to continue operating smoothly, this refrigerant needs to stay as a gas and away from the compressor. As a result, a suction accumulator is a great inclusion for any heat pump. It works by trapping any refrigerant that is in liquid form, thus keeping it away from the compressor.

These heat pumps have been optimized to suit almost any type of house. This is the demonstrated in the wide range of sizes of the heat pumps. This is unlike some heat pumps, which have a very rigid size selection. The Amana heat pumps are also known for their extremely quiet operation. This is made possible by the company’s patented Smartshift technology.

What’s the Difference Between Goodman and Amana?

Actaully it is very common to see several brands from a same manufacturer in the HVAC industry. For some cases, the only differerce is the logo and the units are 100% same. But we need to tell you that this is not the case for most Amana Models. Here is quote from BaldLoonie who is the global moderator for HVAC-Talk forum. He has compared the Goodman GSC13 with Amana ASC13 Model for so many details.

GSC13
Many sizes use recip compressors, scroll 3.5 ton and up
Stamped top, hang a fan motor, cheapest way to do it.

ASC13
100% Copeland scroll.
Heavy compressor cover for sound reduction.
Heavy duty top and venturi for sound reduction.
2 speed fan motor, extra sound reduction in mild weather.
Compressor protection switches.
Copeland Comfort Alert diagnostics module tied in with pressure switches to lock out the compressor in event of problem, saves compressor.

As we can see in the above quote, Amana is acutally a high end product which will take you more money for that. Some homeowners or even contractors don’t know that and only suggest the cheaper Goodman Unit.

Amana offers its heat pumps in two series. These are the distinction(ASZC18, ASZC16) and the standard series(ASZ16, ASZ14, ANZ14). The standard Amana series are fitted with the ComfortNet Communication capabilities. With this feature, the heat pump shares information with other HVACs in the house for better regulation. This feature is not available in the standard series of the Amana heat pumps. Another equally important feature to consider is the brand of the compressor fitted in the heat pump. Most heat pumps use the same type of compressor in their models. The industry-leading compressor is known as Copeland compressor. This is available in all Amana’s series. As a result, they are likely to last longer and operate with less trouble.

For those who love quiet in their house, the Amana utilizes the SmartShift technology for AS Series(ASZC18, ASZC16,ASZ16, ASZ14), this technology ensures that the heat pumps are able to operate more quietly. For extra noise reduction, one should choose a heat pump with a two-speed fan motor. Besides noise reduction, this increases the efficiency of the heat pump.

So our final recomendation is ASZ16. With the life-time compressor protection and high SEER ratings there is no need to buy the highest level ASZC18.

What Contractor Say About Amana?

We used to use consumers feedback as the main source to help you learn more about the heat pump reviews. That being the case, people love to share comlaints when they come accross problems and don’t have time to search and submit feedbacks for normally working units. That will mislead our readers. So we decide to interview more offline and online contractors to get an objective reviews. Of course we will reserve a part of customer reviews which can show the frequently reported repair problems.

Best Warranty Terms

What most people do not realize is that most heat pump systems are quite similar. This is especially the case with most high-end systems. For instance, Amana heat pumps use the Copeland compressor, which is also used by other leading manufacturers. In most cases, people tend to blame the heat pumps for working improperly, while, in reality, the installation is the problem. When one compares the warranty terms, the Amana out-does the other manufacturers. While other manufacturers offer to replace the Compressor, Amana replaces the entire unit. If my car engine fails, I would prefer getting a new car instead of having the engine replaced.

Bad Logic For Defrost

When the coil was below freezing for the default presetting period, Amana will go into the defrost mode which means many unnecessary defrost going on. This would increase noise and may a little bit affect the life span of outdoor unit. Other brands like Ruud/Rheem have a better logic to know when it is accurate time to defrost.

Best First Year Failure Rate Based On Right Sizing and Installation

Amana now has the best first year failure rate of any brand, with the least amount of failures. I’ve been an Amana dealer now for over 10 years, and honestly i can tell you the reliability is there as long as it’s sized and installed properly. Finding the right installation is the key for increasing the life span.

When I was installing this unit, I came across a number of negative comments. However, I was impressed by the specs so I decided to go ahead with the purchase. What I have realized is that most people do not pay close attention to their units. As a result, this leads to constant breakdowns. A good analogy would be refusing to change the oil regularly in a vehicle. Soon it is going to break down. Another thing to note is that one should only use certified mechanics. The company knows their machines best and they give the best advice to their qualified contractors.
$6,200 16 SEER ASZC16 Kansas City, MO 3200 sqft
This is the best value for money I have got in years. This unit does everything it is supposed to just as promised by the manufacturer. What I loved most about the Amana heat pump was how cooperative the contractor. I remember I had a problem with the fan motor a while back. The company did not hesitate to send a replacement part. The warranty terms for this unit are really quite impressive. I would recommend this unit to anyone.
$5,400 Amana ASZ14 14 SEER Knoxville, TN 1800 sqft
I needed a simple solution to my home’s heating needs and the 1.5-ton model I purchased was just perfect. When making such an important purchase, it is best to take your time to understand what a good heat pump entails. Make sure the contractor does a perfect sizing of the home. Otherwise, you may not enjoy all the energy conservation that comes with a heat pump.
$8,800 Amana ASZC18 Milan, IN 3500 sqft
My home is a bit large and I needed a model that was both powerful and efficient. Since I replaced my old model, I can honestly say the reduction in my electricity bill has been amazing. This is definitely a great model for people who want good heating coupled with efficiency. With a SEER, rating of 18, it is Amana’s most efficient heat pump. However, the high initial cost will be totally worth it in the end.
$6,350 Amana ASZ16 Fort Worth, TX 2600 sqft
When I purchased this model, I decided it was better to pay more upfront and get quality later on. I can say that this choice has really worked out for the best. This heat pump delivers heating just as required and without a strain on the pockets. I would definitely recommend this model to those who want good heating in their home. Additionally, I was quite impressed by the warranty terms.
$4,300 SSZ14 Distinctions Tampa, FL 2300 sqft
I managed to snag this piece a while back. It has been five years now and the unit continues to work perfectly. The best advice I can offer is for people to combine a quality brand with a quality contractor. If any issues arise with such a high-quality model, it is most likely due to the contractor rather than the heat pump.

  • When I built my house 3 years ago my builder put an Amana system in my home. BIG MISTAKE. After three years the reversing valve broke leaving causing all the Freon to leak out. When I called Amana, because the unit is still under warranty, they replaced the $250 part but refused to pay for all the Freon that leaked out as a result of their faulty part ($600) or the labor charges to fix the unit ($900). I wish I had paid for a unit manufactured by ANYBODY ELSE. The customer service and quality of this product has to be the worst on the market!

    • Hi

Thanks for your personal review. I believe the main problem result in leaking is a bad installation with a bad contractor. Could you tell us what’s your contractor and we will build a shame of wall later to remind our readers to avoid these contractors.
