Trane Central Air Conditioning Buying Guide – Reviews, Prices and Tax Credits

Note: Before you dive into the specific brand review, we highly recommend you to read our elaborate Central Air Conditioner Buying Guide in advance, there are several crucial steps you need to take before you even start to think about the brand.

When it comes to central air conditioning systems, today’s customers have a lot of options. The very first step is to select a brand which defines quality and dependability. With its reputation for excellence, affordability, durability and the best after sales support, Trane is a popular choice. The company offers eight central air conditions to choose from which have all the advanced features like the variable cooling systems and in-duct cooling pipes. Some of these systems are specifically designed keeping in mind the tight budget but the quality remains top notch.

Trane’s Unique Features

Spine-Fin Coils: Some Brands prefer to use skimped copper coils which potentially result in corrosion and refrigerant leaking in next 8-15 years. Trane’s exclusive coils are made of all aluminum which are more durable. What’s more, the spine-fin design is more efficient on heat transfer, which is one of the reasons why Trane can get a higher SEER rating (up to 21 SEER) compared to most competitors.

Variable-Speed Cooling: Actually this is not the exclusive feature, however only the high-end brands (like Carrier, Lennox and American Standard) can launch this cutting-edge features for cooling products. Most people only know that variable-speed cooling can significantly increase efficiency, while actually, the side effects include better humid control, air quality and lower sound level. For more details, you can read our latest guide: Single Stage vs. Two Stage vs. Variable Speed

The cons for variable-speed is the high repair cost. According to contractor’s feedback, the variable compressor is 3 times as expensive to fix. So you need to balance the risk and benefit.

Exclusive Compressor: The most expensive part of any air conditioning system is its compressor. More than 80% residential HVAC manufacturers use the third-party compressors called Copeland Scroll Compressor. However American Standard/Trane insist on building their own compressors. One feature of Trane’s compressor is the roto-lock connectors design whereas most other manufacturers’ compressors are welded in. The bad thing for the exclusive compressor is the higher repair cost because only a few technicians know the structure of it.

Cons For Trane

Necessary maintenance for condenser coils

Spine-Fin coils are the double-edged sword. The problem for this coil is that it can easily absorb the dirt from the air and loses it’s efficiency much faster. Cleaning coils is a professional job and you need to ask for contractor’s help.

A little Noisy

Except for the high-end variable-speed models, most single-stage models’ sound level is around 75db. If you choose these kinds of units, better place the condenser 20 feet away from your house.

Affordable High Price

We call it “Affordable” because, as a high-end brand, Trane is affordable compared to Lennox and Carrier, but more expensive than most other brands like Goodman, Rheem, Ruud and Heil. Trane is an old and reputable brand but you need to pay extra money for that.

Proprietary Thermostat

A special two-wire connector on some models means a proprietary thermostat must be used with the system

Note: Trane Communicating System is an optional function for high-end models with a monthly fee. In my opinion, it is not worth the money. You can install a $200-$300 wifi ColorTouch thermostat instead.

XL20i & XV20i: They are the most advanced and highest-efficient central cooling unit offered by the company. It comes with a variable-speed compressor and multi-stage cooling option as we talked before. Trucomfort temperature control system is capable of controlling the temperature up to 0.5 degrees. So these models are recommended for those of you who have enough budget.

XL18i & XR17: Both are two stage cooling units which come with a 12-year warranty. It has 4-star energy rating and also comes with built-in Trucomfort feature. We are a big fan of two-stage cooling which is enough to meet most homeowner’s expectations of efficiency, sound level, air quality and humid control. If you plan to live in this house for at least 5 years and don’t want to pay extra 2000 dollars for latest technology. XL18i and XR17 are good choices.

XR13 and XB13: These two are the low-end air conditioners provided by Trane and are specially designed to fit in everyone’s budget. These models come with a warranty of 10 years and have single stage cooling systems with a single compressor. These models are recommended for homeowners who have a limited budget or plan to move house in less than 5 years.

Reviews From Contractors

My clients found a huge reduction in electricity bills along with improved efficiency on using Trane’s products. The quality of these systems is top notch making them durable with minimum amount of maintenance. But a few homeowners tell me that Trane is not as durable as 20 years before. The life span for Trane now is around 10-15 years instead of 20 years in 1990’s.
-Amin from Suns HVAC LLC

Trane’s high end models like XV20i usually cost you a fortune. Of course, they possess all kinds of hi-tech features, for example, XL20i  comes with lots of luxurious features like Trucomfort, noise control and multi stage cooling. You may find that the money you spent on these luxurious features are not proportional to the reduction on your electrical bill. It depends on how long you use your AC. The longer operating time, the more you earn your extra initial invest on your AC back. So it’s important to choose the right model according to your personal conditions.

$7,739 installed 4 ton Trane XL20i Charlotte, NC 2900 sqft
I have owned my existing air conditioner since the year 2010. During the time of installation, my utility bills were in an overload of $200.00 at the most horrible summer months in Florida. The HVAC guy who installed it for me assured me that I would have huge savings on the new Trane air conditioner. To date, a few years later, my electric bill is a reduced amount to half of that during the critical months of summer. I could fully recommend Trane conditioners to all people.
$4,399 15 SEER XL15i Houston, TX 1900 sqft
I got my Trane XL15i unit installed by a skilled technician about a year and a half ago. This was a replacement of my old Rheem unit that lasted for ten years. With a sixteen SEER performance, this is unit was quite. Its air handler was as well installed and is practically quiet.
$3,450 installed 1.5 ton Trane XR15 New York 1600 sqft
For about three months, I have been using this model, and I am satisfied with the performance. No repairs so far or the regular maintenance. However, the Ac is too noisy and this is rather annoying. I prefer a silent unit. Although the unit is little pricey, I have received value for my money, and I can’t complain.
$4,990 installed 3 ton XB14 14 SEER Tampa ,Florida 2400 sqft
After a workmate had suggested this model, I took a chance with Trane, and I am not disappointed. The price was quite friendly given the high efficiency and the fact that this model is energy star rated. This unit assures me of my indoor comfort, and I have not done any repairs for six years since I purchased it. It is a bit noisy, but I am used to that now. If you want a high efficient furnace at a pocket-friendly price
$4,230 installed 3 ton XB300 (discontinued) St. Joseph, Michigan 2600 sqft
The low purchase price is what attracted me into buying this model which I have owned for about four and a half years now. With this unit, I saved money on this equipment and still got high efficiency not forgetting the single stage valve and motor giving reliable performance. The unit is economical in the long run
$4,300 installed Trane XR13 Dallas, TX 2800 sqft
This model offers the right balance between affordability and features. I had an old air conditioner, but it stopped functioning during the last winter. I decided to try a Trane conditioner as recommended by one of my cousins. The XR13 model heats my house quick and even, and my gas bills have gone down by a noticeable margin.
$2,249 Unit 20 SEER Trane Xl20i Miami, Florida 2800 sqft
The air conditioner I bought from Trane about 6 months ago works great! I wanted to hold back my review until I was sure I got what I wanted and the Trane XL20i I bought cost me $2,249. I bought the 3 ton size and it hasn’t given me any problems for the time I have had it. Thank you Trane.
$4,200 2.5 ton Trane XR15 Los Angeles, CA 2100 sqft
I was promised that this thing would save on my light bill and have impeccable functionality. However, I find myself stuck with a leaky air conditioner that has broken down after 8 months already. This product is not what the advertisements say it is. So inefficient and even more frustrating
$4,200 Trane XL19i Chicago, IL 2400 sqft
I thought this was going to blow my mind with its functionality but it turned out to have problems. I don’t know whether it’s the air conditioner or poor installation but the thing is munching on my power bill like nobody’s business. I don’t know what is wrong and that’s what’s most frustrating. The guys I called to install haven’t gotten back to me. I think I will have to use the warranty here.
$9,100 Trane XL16c Washington 1800 sqft
The Trane air conditioner we got is superb. I knew about it from an internet blog and it came highly recommended, now I see why. I got some technicians from The Air Guy to come and install it and they were pleasant too. Trane XL16c Gas Pack is great and save me a lot of time to install another gas furnace
$8,420 Trane XL14c Atlanta, GA 2100 sqft
Haven’t had any problems for the time I have had it. I compared XL14c and XL16c and choose XL14c at last. So far it did a good job.

  • I was looking to upgrade my heat pump due to >$900 heat bills in winter. The unit only a few years old but a low end brand and model. I want the VX20i…couple of questions.

Will this unit with the variable speed reduce my energy bill?

Can I just buy the heat pump and install that with out messing with the air handler inside?

Are there retailers that just sell the heat pump by it self?

    Thank you!

    • Hi Scott

#1 VX20i can reduce your bill but you need to tell me your previous model then I can help you calculate if the upgrading is cost-effective.

#2 Not matched air handler will reduce the efficiency of the whole unit, You need to ask the contractor to confirm if your air handler is matched with your condensing unit.

#3 Hard to find it and especially for XV20i. We don’t recommend you buy it from the retailer.
