Note: Before you dive into the specific brand review, we highly recommend you to read our elaborate Central Air Conditioner Buying Guide in advance, there are several crucial steps you need to take before you even start to think about the brand.
(Last Update: Feb 27th, 2017)
As a consumer, choosing the best central air conditioner can be quite hard given the many brands of such available in the market. The Carrier Company got its name from the inventor, Willis Carrier. Carrier has been selling a vast variety of commercial and residential air conditioners, together with central ACs and ductless systems. Carrier air company is popular more often than not to contractors and dealers in the HVAC technologies.
Carrier’s Exclusive Features
Noise levels as low as 56 decibel
The decibel standards of a particular air condition indicate the degree of noise it makes. What does 56db mean? 56 db rates at about the same noise level as a whisper. Actually, it is hard to see less than 60db noisy level for central air conditioners. Only Trane and Carrier can get down to 56db. If you have to install your AC outdoor unit near the bedroom or commonly used area, we recommend choosing an air conditioner with less than 63 db.
21 SEER Efficiency Rating
The higher the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratings), the more efficient a unit is. The average SEER rating for a central air conditioner is 14-15. 21 SEER means 30% more efficient than average 15 SEER. This is a huge saving in the long run especially for the place with high energy pricing.
Carrier Scroll Compressor
Actually, this is not the unique feature but the key reason why Carrier air conditioner is durable. The compressor is the most expensive component of any air conditioner. All conditioners from Carrier equip Copeland Scroll compressor (as we mentioned before in many other reviews) or Carrier Scroll compressor. Such compressors are the most durable and highly reliable in the market. The compressor adds the pressure on the Freon and produces heat. A Scroll compressor engages a smaller amount friction as compared to a conventional compressor thus increasing their consistency and naturally makes for a more silent unit. An additional mechanism by Carrier to protect the compressor is a short cycle. Short-cycling happens when the compressor is cycled on and off during a period of a time. Since short-cycling can cut down the lifespan of a compressor, the protector enforces a four or six-minute hangs around after power interruption. The exterior itself help to shield the components kept outdoors.
Model Analysis and Recommendation
|Series||Model||SEER||Sound Level||Compressor||SILENCER System|
1. Infinity Series
As we talked before that Carrier is a high-end brand in the HVAC market and the price is $1000-$2000 higher than middle-level brands like Rheem, Heil and Goodman. However, the average price of Infinity Series (high-end) is only $300-$400 higher than Performance Series (middle-end). The average SEER of Infinity is 19-21 which is 20% more efficient than Performance in the long term using. You can easily get your extra money back in 2-3 years. If you are sensitive to noise or have to place the outdoor unit near bedroom or living room, INFINITY 24VNA9 is a good choice. If you are living in southern states and have to keep your air conditioner running in 6-9 months,21 SEER 24ANB1 or 24ANA1 can save you extra 10% power bill than other Infinity models.
2. Carrier Comfort Series or other brands for the short-term house.
If you have the plan of moving house in less than 5 years, we recommend installing a 13-14 SEER unit. We also recommend installing some quality but low-end level brands like Payne, Ruud or Armstrong. Please note that 13 SEER air condition is prohibited in some states since 2016 and you can check more details here.
Feedbacks From Contractor
As a trusted top brand in the marketplace, Carrier has an extensive range of air conditioning units that offer maximum efficiency style, reliability, and comfort. Carrier product line includes of the Infinity Series, Comfort Series, and the Performance Series. Each one of these air conditioning units is made to last and to provide for the needs of their customers. Carrier air conditioners are available in the online market, and all you have to do is to make an order of the same and then have a contractor install it. Some consumers are also buying them directly from contractors. Most service calls on this conditioners are due to human error on poor maintenance and poor installation of the furnace. As long as a qualified HVAC technician does the installation, the unit will serve you long enough. Most Carrier central ACs draw positive feedback. Although it is being overtaken by other models in relation to ultimate effectiveness with its 21 SEER rating. However, it is still good enough to be Energy Star qualified.

|I had this air conditioner that served me for 10 plus years and I thought it’s about time I replaced it with something more efficient. It had become slower over time. This new Carrier air conditioner I just got does it for me. Just plug it in and everything is great. Thanks Carrier|
|$3,999||Infinity 19VS-24VNA9||San Jose, CA||2200 sqft|
|A friend of mine recommended it and it’s turned out to be just what I needed. The unit cools and warms the place really fast and it gets the temperature just right. It’s a good replacement for the one I had before.|
|$3,550 installed||Performance 16-24ACC6||Houston, TX||1600 sqft|
|After living in our house for 15 years we figured it’s time to replace the air conditioning. I went ahead and bought this Carrier and I must say it does the job quite well. It takes very little time to warm up or cool down the house which is one of the things we didn’t get from the one we had before. The unit hasn’t needed any repair work and I’ve had it for about half a year now.|
|$4,990 installed||Comfort 14-24ACC4||Washington||2950 sqft|
|My eldest son always complained about how the AC was run-down and we needed to get a new one. For some time I dismissed him but then I realized that it really didn’t distribute air like it did before. We’ve had the thing for 16 years so I didn’t really think of anything else except replacing it. The one I got is worth every penny. The noise level is low and it’s great on energy saving too.|
|$4,290 installed||17-24ANB7||Phoenix, AZ||2200 sqft|
|I’m really picky with my stuff. I like my equipment and appliances original, I won’t have anything to do with cheap knock-offs. So buying this air conditioner to replace my old one was somewhat of a challenging fact. You can’t trust the commercial these days. Am glad I got this though because it has restored my faith in good manufacturing. I haven’t had a problem with this new Carrier I got since I bought it 7 months ago. It’s just perfect.|
|$4,990 installed||Comfort 13 coastal-24ABB3||Plano, TX||2700 sqft|
|I thought this was going to be an improvement but it turned out to be a down grade. This AC cannot run for a month without breaking down and am not talking working under par, totally shutting down. The first 3 months were great but so far it’s just costing me money. I don’t like this at all.|
|$2,649 Unit||Performance Series||Los Angeles, CA||2800 sqft|
|This thing isn’t what they say it is. It’s really disappointing to spend so much money and still get something that doesn’t work like the brochure says. I got this air conditioner about a year ago but now it looks like I will need a replacement. It’s too noisy to keep running so we just turn it off after a while. Someone from the company should come and solve this ASAP.|
|$4,200 installed||14 SEER 24AHA4 4 ton||Canada||2100 sqft|
|I am very disappointed with Carrier. I was expecting an amazing product after getting so many good reviews from many of my colleagues. Unfortunately, the AC I bought broke down within one year. I was shocked and genuinely concerned. I am not sure if this is an isolated case but I would not recommend it to anyone. Even if it is a rare manufacturing defect, being a popular company they should have better quality checking mechanisms. I hope this never happens to anybody.|
|$3,800 installed||Carrier 3 ton 13 SEER||Chicago, IL||1800 sqft|
|I was very happy in the beginning because things ran smoothly without any noise. Moreover, I saw noticeable changes in my electricity bills. After two years, things began to change. There have been awkward sounds. I got it checked and repaired. I am hoping that is the end of the issue. Overall, it has been a good experience. Dependable on the whole. Neat operation and very good cooling system. Yes, I was not happy with its looks in the beginning. But then realized ACs are for cooling and not for beautification.|
|$5,000 installed||Carrier Comfort 15 SEER||Charlotte, NC||2800 sqft|
|I used to own a high-end AC from a very reputed brand (Trane). 2 years ago, I got it replaced and decided to give Carrier try. I was shocked to see that Trane ACs are actually as good, if not better! Considering the price, I did not expect so much quality. I had to get it repaired once though, but it was a minor issue and there have been no other troubles since. It was a very good buy.|
|$4,155 installed||24ANB6||New Jersey||2960 sqft|
|I bought this AC unit around 10 months ago. So far, everything has been fine. My old York AC needed repair every 6 months and also had an awkward sound every now and then. With Carrier, there have never been any such issues. It is a smooth AC device which performs its duty as promised. A highly recommended product from Carrier!|
|$3,255 installed||24ACC6 4 ton||Miami, FL||2220 sqft|
|“Amazing cooling system”
Buying Carrier AC was a very good decision I will never regret. I realized my Old Amana AC was actually a rip-off. Things couldn’t have been better. The cooling is very quick. My old AC used to take 3-4 times longer to cool up my room in the same manner. After trying out Carrier in my home 2 years ago, I have replaced all the ACs in my office to Trane. So far, there has been no trouble. In fact, it helped me to save a whopping amount on energy bills. I realized this when I was checking my bills. My energy consumption has in fact halved! This does not come with a compromise on cooling though.
